On Wednesday, starting with 19:00, the Legia – Omonia match will be played, within the preliminaries of the Champions League, the second round. The two teams have never met before in European competitions. Legia has two appearances in the group stage of the Champions League (1995/1996, 2016/2017), while Omonia never managed to pass the third preliminary round of the competition.
The Legion won for the 14th time in the Polish first league, marking the 6th title of champion, in the last decade. The “military” have played twice in the Champions League groups, the last time in the 2016/2017 season. In the previous season, the Polish champion played in the Europa League qualifiers, losing in the play-offs of the competition, score 0-1 overall with the Scottish group Rangers. In the first preliminary round of the Champions League, Legia beat the Northern Irish team Linfield 1-0.
On the other hand, Omonia, coached by the well-known Norwegian Henning Berg, did not play in the first preliminary round. The Cypriots have 21 titles, ticking the first trophy last season after a 10-year break. In the European cups, Omonia did not participate in the 2016/2017 season, when it was eliminated by Beitar Jerusalem, score 3-3 overall, in the second preliminary round of the Europa League. With 13 foreigners in the group, including the Hungarian Adam Lang, former at CFR Cluj, Omonia starts with a second chance in the dispute with Legia.
Legia is a more valuable, more experienced team, it will also play on its own field, having all the chances to qualify further.
