As the MLB offseason concluded, numerous analysts and publications provided grades to assess the performance of each team. The winners were identified as the Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, and both New York teams while the Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies, and Chicago White Sox were considered the biggest losers. However, it is essential to examine how these teams have fared thus far in the 2023 season.
This article will provide an overview of the off-season moves made by each team and evaluate their performance through the first ten weeks of the regular season.
Offseason Winner: San Diego Padres
The San Diego Padres made significant moves during the offseason acquiring Matt Carpenter, Xander Bogaerts, Nelson Cruz, Seth Lugo, Rougned Odor, Michael Wacha, and Brent Honeywell Jr.
They also re-signed and extended key players such as Nick Martinez, Robert Suarez, Yu Darvish, Manny Machado, and Craig Stammen. The Padres aimed to strengthen their starting rotation and bolster their lineup, making them a top contender for the World Series according to MLB odds.
However, the Padres’ performance in the first 10 weeks of the season has been less than stellar. While Bogaerts has provided value with his wins above replacement, his batting average and OPS have fallen short of expectations. The team has struggled with inconsistent performances from the lineup and starting rotation, resulting in a subpar record. Nevertheless, the recent improvement in their starting pitching and the return of Machado from injury could potentially ignite a turnaround for the Padres.
Offseason Loser: Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds received a negative assessment for their offseason moves, as they focused on rebuilding and preparing for the post-Joey Votto era. While the Reds did not make significant additions, they signed Wil Myers to a one-year deal and made several other minor acquisitions. Their priority was to assess the capabilities of their young players rather than adding more veterans to the roster.
Surprisingly, the Reds have performed better than anticipated, particularly on the offensive side. They have excelled in on-base percentage and showcased promising young talent. However, their starting pitching has been a major weakness, leading to a poor run differential. Despite their positive strides, the Reds are projected to finish the season at the bottom of the NL Central.
Offseason Winner: New York Yankees
The New York Yankees managed to retain Aaron Judge, their star player, by signing him to a substantial contract extension. Additionally, they re-signed Anthony Rizzo and made significant acquisitions, including Carlos Rodón, Tommy Kahnle, Franchy Cordero, and Willie Calhoun. The Yankees aimed to bolster their roster and address their pitching needs, particularly with the signing of Rodón.
Unfortunately, Rodón has been plagued by injuries, preventing him from making his debut for the team. The starting pitching overall has struggled, relying heavily on Judge and Rizzo’s offensive contributions. Despite their underwhelming performance in pitching, the Yankees remain competitive and are on track to meet the expectations set for them at the beginning of the season.
Offseason Loser: Baltimore Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles promised a significant spending spree during the offseason but ultimately failed to make substantial moves. Their most notable acquisition was Kyle Gibson, whom they signed to a one-year deal. The Orioles’ lack of significant additions disappointed fans, considering their successful 2022 season. However, they have managed to perform better than expected thus far.
The Orioles’ success can be attributed to their impressive bullpen, led by Yennier Cano and Felix Bautista. The team’s pitching has exceeded expectations, keeping them in contention for a playoff spot. Nonetheless, Baltimore may need to make significant moves during the trade deadline to sustain their success.
