Most people will be looking forward to the holidays and the end of the year but real tennis fans will already be eagerly anticipating the first Grand Slam tournament of 2025 – the Australian Open. This competition traditionally kicks off the elite tennis calendar year and it promises to be another exciting two weeks in the heat of Melbourne.

Jannik Sinner claimed his first-ever major title in 2024, defeating the reigning champion – and legend of the sport – Novak Djokovic in the semifinals. The young Italian really arrived onto the scene in style during the last year, winning the US Open as well as making it to the final four of the French Open. It is no surprise that Sinner heads the favorites list for 2025 and will be hoping to repeat his triumph to win back-to-back Australian Open titles.

However, there is a very competitive field of challengers looking to claim their own piece of glory in Melbourne next January. None more so than Novak Djokovic, who will be hoping to win this competition for a record 11th time. It will not be long before the best players in the world take to the courts in Australia – so who will end up being crowned the champion?

Novak Djokovic

He has won everything going in the sport of tennis but an 11th Australian Open title would be just as well-greeted by Novak Djokovic as any of his tournament wins in his legendary career on the courts. With other big names retiring, the Serbian is one of the last old-er men standing and will want to prove that he can still compete at the highest level.

For added excitement, Djokovic will have Andy Murray in his corner as coach. The Scottish former player is a legend in his own right and will be keen to show that he can continue to be successful even after hanging up his own racquet. Even at the age of 37, Djokovic remains one of the players to beat and has to be regarded as a top favorite for the title.

Jannik Sinner

It feels a little unfair to profile another player before the current champion when we are talking about the potential winner of the 2025 competition. But Jannik Sinner won’t mind – especially if he is able to go all the way once again and win a second title in a row. Many top players have in the past and the Italian certainly has the power and talent to enter the next level of the game.

After leading Italy to a Davis Cup triumph in 2023 and making it to the semifinals of Wimbledon, Sinner really kicked on in 2024, capturing those first Grand Slam titles and also winning the Davis Cup for his country again. His powerful backhand and serves will be too much for the majority of the field in Melbourne and it would really not be a surprise to see Sinner coming out onto the court when the final comes around in January.

Carlos Alcaraz

Like many Spanish athletes, Carlos Alcaraz looked to the great Rafael Nadal as an inspiration for his own career and he would surely love to become the first Spaniard to win the Australian Open since the great man won the last of his titles in 2022. With Nadal now retired, Alacaraz will feel that it is his job to continue the good work and win the Australian Open on behalf of his country.

Historically, this has been the least successful Grand Slam for Alcaraz. His quarterfinal appearance in 2024 was his best yet and he will be hoping to bring this tournament up to par with his record in the other three. He won both the French Open and Wimbledon in 2024, of course, so will feel that he is definitely in with a chance, no matter what his Australian Open record might say.

Danni Medvedev

The Russian professional was seeded number three in last year’s competition and that enabled him to avoid Novak Djokovic on his route to the final. Unfortunately, Medvedev was unable to slow Sinner down, even though he led by two sets at one point – the exact same result he suffered in 2022.

That defeat made it three out of three in Melbourne and the French Open in 2021 remains Medvedev’s only Grand Slam triumph so far. Although many pundits will be looking at Sinner or Djokovic as the next champion, Medvedev might be able to use what might be a relatively low seeding to his advantage to finally claim a title Down Under.

Alexander Zverev

Alexander Zverev has never made it past the semifinal stage of the Australian Open but after a serious ankle injury in 2022 it is an achievement in itself that the German athlete has been able to regularly compete at all over the last two years. Now he will be travelling to Melbourne with realistic dreams of winning a first-ever Grand Slam.

He reached the quarterfinals in 2024 after being seeded sixth and went on to make it to the final of the French Open and the fourth round of Wimbledon. He will still go a little under the radar for the 2025 Australian Open but could spring a surprise, especially if some of the other high seeds suffer an upset in the opening rounds.

And the Winner Is…

With Nadal now out of the picture, Novak Djokovic is the last man standing from the “Big Three” and surely counting down the time before his own retirement. But that is not to say that there is no life left in the old dog. It would be no surprise at all if Djokovic turns back the clock to claim a record 11th title.

Although he is well known for his Wimbledon triumphs, the Australian Open has always been his favorite Grand Slam and he will be spurred on by the thought of gaining revenge and beating Sinner in 2025. He may not be the out-and-out favorite that he used to be – but Djokovic might well end up being the champion once more.
