Match preview: Siena – Pescara

This is the 6th game taking place between Siena and Pescara in Artemio Franchi stadium. Till now the count reads: 2 wins Siena and 3 draws.

Siena wants to achieve the 10th win at home pitch, and jump in first place, waiting thus the developments in Atalanta and Novara camps. Up to now Siena has done better than everybody else at home, 9 wins in comparison to 8 wins of Novara, however the coach Conte’s team had to suffer a lot in the last game won by 2-1 vs Albinoleffe. Good news are the returns of experienced defender Ficagna and midfielder Carobbio in the first formation. The attacker Brienza will probably miss due to nifluence, however Calaio and Larrondo are good enough upfront.

Pescara is one of the surprises of this season. Arrived from Serie C, this team without big names is only two points from the play-off zone, and is full of enthusiasm at present. Six weeks undefeated, draws away to strong Novara and Livorno, are the testimony to that. The team boast the best defense of Serie B in away games, and now is reinforced with the experienced attacker Bucchi, just the right move to make a quality leap.

This game is very difficult to be called. Siena at home has been almost perfect till now, however the team suffered a lot against Albinoleffe, and now is in front of a team passing even a better moment. Pescara is fulfilling the right elements that I look for in a team: confidence after two months unbeaten, commitment as the perfect defense shows, and composure as a team. So all considered, I will back Pescara defense to resist.

Match preview: Bayer Leverkusen – Borussia Dortmund

Bundesliga will come back this evening after the winter break, with an exciting game between two top 3 teams. On Bay Arena, Bayer Leverkusen will meet the current leaders Borussia Dortmund, in an attempt to reduce the 10 points gap that separates them.

The visitors impressed so far, losing only 2 games and allowing only 10 goals in their goal, having the best defense from the league by far. Even if they are the only Bundesliga team able to play defense, their attack is not to be neglected, scoring more than 2 goals per game in average. They will be without Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa who travelled with the NT for the Asian Cup. He will most likely be replaced in the first eleven by Kuba or (why not?) Zidan.

Bayer is a spectacular team, able to score many goals but their defense is their Achille’s heel. They conceded 2 goals in every one of their last 4 games before the break but they still managed to win two of them, while the others ended in a draw. As we see, their attack is working smooth and now both Kiessling and Helmes are fit to play. Add the support from Sam and Renato Augusto behind them and we have a great amount of creativity and fire power upfront. Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal is a doubt for this game, but he could be replaced by Bender, while Ballack is recovered after a long injury and will probably take a sit on the bench.

As much as I don’t understand why Bayer are set at favorites here, I have my doubts in backing BVB as well. For me, the best bet here is a bet on goals since both teams have good attacks, while Bayer’s defense is simply weak. Also, considering Bayer’s attacking force, I doubt BVB will have any chances in keeping a clean sheet, therefore they will need to open up and take more risks. The odds for the over 2,5 goals are quite high for a Bundesliga game and I think they are worthy of a mid-high stakes bet.

Match preview: Palermo – Chievo

The remake of the game seen three days ago, finished in an inglorious 0-0 score, will take place today, however this time the place is not Bentegodi stadium, but the great Sicily itself.
Palermo is fresh in Italy Cup, while Chievo took out in the preceding round Novara, with a heavy 3-0 score. The winner tonight will have to go against Parma.

Match preview: India – Australia

From my point of view, India are the worst team present at this Asian Cup. They have qualified for the 3rd time in their history to this competition, this being their first presence after 24 years. They have qualified as a consequence of winning the AFC Challenge Cup back in 2008, after dealing with ‘giants’ like Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Myanmar, so this achievement is close to nothing in the big football. This achievement saved them from playing in the qualifying group C, where they would have been drafted along UAE, Uzbekistan and Malaysia, having no chances to grab one of the first 2 places. Except striker Sunil Chhetri who is playing for Sporting Kansas City, all the other are playing in the domestic league. Moreover, coach Bob Houghton also called two players who are currently free agents.

Title contenders

Australia are one of the main contenders to win the trophy, and many of their players are performing in the strong European leagues. They have won qualifying group B, where they’ve played along Kuwait, Oman and Indonesia, without putting too much effort and using some mixed squads for many times. Stars like Schwarzer, Tim Cahill, Emerton or Kewell were called for this tournament, this speaking a lot by the serious way they are approaching it. They’ve got a tough group here, along South Korea, Bahrain and India so, most likely the group winner could be decided by the goal difference, this meaning the difference they will win against India.

Big Aussies win

There is a huge difference between these two teams, from every point of view: professionalism, pace, stamina, international experience, individual quality etc… I believe the Aussies will dominate physically this game and really can’t see the Indians putting a challenge here. The AH line is set at 2,5 but I believe Australia could easily win by more than 4 goals difference. I am willing to back them, but only for small stakes, this being their first game in the tournament and maybe they need time to gel with the competition. Even so, it’s entirely up to them at which difference they will win tomorrow.

Match preview: Levante – Valencia

Levante UD is placed in 17th spot (15 points, 4W – 3D – 10L) in the Spanish Primera. They started the season very bad losing the three first matches. This fact was predictable because Levante UD is the team with the lowest budget in the Spanish Primera. They came out from “Ley Concursal” and the club is very optimist to face the future from an economic view.
Luis Garcia (Levante UD’s coach) is a great coach and he is doing a great work to build a tough team to beat in the Spanish Primera. They have improved their performances lately, mainly at home where teams as Real Madrid CF (0-0) and Atletico Madrid (2-0) haven’t been able to win.
Nano (central defender) is suspended, so his place will be taken by Robusté. Nacho Gonzalez (midfielder) and Asier del Horno (defender) are injured. They will recover Javi Venta (defender) and their most important striker, Felipe Caicedo.
The probable starting eleven would be: Reina, Javi Venta, Robusté, Ballesteros, Juanfran, Xavi Torres, Pallardó, Xisco Nadal, Ruben Suarez, Juanlu and Caicedo.

Cup Disappointment

Valencia CF is placed in the 4th spot (31 points, 9W – 4D – 4L) in the Spanish Primera. They have started the season quite well. I think they began better than everybody even after selling their best two players in summer market (David Villa and David Silva). They signed up several players of medium level and Unai Emery (Valencia CF’s coach) feels quite comfortable with this kind of players.
They lost their last match in Spanish Cup against Villarreal CF (4-2). They did an excellent first half (0-2), but after this good performance, they totally failed and were outplayed by Villarreal in second half (4-2).
They will have very important absences: Cesar (first goalkeeper) and Moya (goalkeeper) are injured. David Albelda (defensive midfielder) is also injured. Joaquin Sanchez (offensive midfielder) and Ricardo Costa (central defender) are suspended. Jeremy Mathieu (left defender) and Tino Costa (midfielder) are doubtful because they haven’t trained well during the week.
The probable starting eleven would be: Guaita, Miguel, Maduro, Navarro, Jordi Alba, Topal, Banega, Mata, Pablo Hernandez, Aduriz and Soldado.

Three seasons later

These two teams meet back after three seasons. This is a local derby and both teams will be highly motivated, but I rate Levante UD more motivated than Valencia CF, at least from the encouragements. Levante UD has lived rather bad moments in these years and they will want to offer a great match to their supporters. I consider this match very similar to Real Sociedad – Athletic Bilbao. Real Sociedad was three seasons without derby and elite football. They showed that wanted to give a present to their supporters and they won deservedly (2-0).
Obviously, the level between these two teams is highly different to Real Sociedad ad Athletic. Levante UD will fight to avoid the relegation and Valencia CF should do it to reach the third spot in the league, but in only one match anything can happen.
Levante UD won Real Madrid (2-0) in the second leg of Spanish Cup with their secondary squad. Important players could rest and every Levante UD’s player was focusing in this match. Not only it’s important for winning to their neighbors but they need add points to their stats after last matches against Athletic Bilbao and FC Barcelona. Those two matches have been quite frustrating for them because they have made two excellent matches without prize and at least they should have collect three points. Levante UD is a tough team to beat at home and they will show against Valencia CF.
On the other hand, Valencia CF is under disappointment after they were trashed by Villarreal CF in the second half last Thursday. They need recover their encouragements, but I don’t think that a local derby is the best option for this. Obviously Valencia CF is much better than Levante UD and they should always beat them clearly, but the absences of Joaquin, Ricardo Costa and probably Tino Costa won’t help to reach that target.
Levante UD will play at full strength and they will be an uncomfortable rival in front of their hot crowd. Sincerely, Valencia CF will be an enigma in this fixture. They can fail again or they can play superb football and outplay Levante UD. Valencia CF has quality and players to get it, but I strongly think this won’t be a placid walk for Valencia CF.
My main reason for betting on Levante UD is the Asian Handicap line. I think that AH line shouldn’t be (+0.5). I think it’s a great chance although risky to invest my money. Caicedo will be a headache for Valencia’s defense without Ricardo Costa.

Match preview: Catania – Inter

After Marco Giampaolo`s took control Catania didn`t play bad against Roma. They would even grap a point. But fact is Roma didn`t play good.

Catania known with their solid defence and defencive game style. Giampolo changed it a bit.

Sicily away one of the most difficult games for all the teams of Italian Serie A.

Spolli and captain Mascara back from injuries but likely to start on the bench.

Potenza,Biagianti,Terlizzi,Maritomo and Izco are still injured.

Hopes are alive

With Leo`s arrival Inter played great against Napoli and managed to get all 3 points. Especially Inter looked better offencively after Benitez`s departure. Everybody knows Leonardo is an offencive minded coach and he is an ambitious person. League is not over yet, there is still 13 points difference between leader Milan and Inter will try to collect all possible points to catch their rivals.

Finally Eto`o is back to the team after his suspension.

Sneijder,Samuel and Julio Cesar are still out.

Leonardo will not change midfield line which played great against Napoli with Motta – Cambiasso and Stankovic. So that means Pandev is going to sit on the bench.

Leo effect

Everybody knows Sicily away is really difficult, will be a tough one but Inter is eager to get all 3 points to stay in the race. Also Eto`o is back and he were in great form. I am expecting to him repeat it.

Catania will be on the field with 4-1-4-1 formation. Maxi Lopez will be alone forward.

Catania were having bad results, I think Giampolo`s men will wait one or two weeks more to get 3 points.

Inter is proved well against Napoli and should continue winning.

Match preview: Numancia – Las Palmas

Juan Carlos Unzue (CD Numancia’s coach) came from FC Barcelona. He was goalkeepers coach with Pepe Guardiola last two years. Every coach who comes out from FC Barcelona and they manage in other team, they are usually failing. They come from Barcelona and they want to play the same style that they played there. Passing game, control the ball and advanced defense. They will have two important absences. Ibrahima (striker) is injured since two months. Nano (offensive midfielder turns to left defender) is injured and he is a crucial absence.

Too many absences

UD Las Palmas is placed in 13th spot (22 points, 5W – 7D – 6L) in the Spanish Segunda. They have had an amazing start of the season, not only amazing but incredible. The Club built a team to fight for avoiding the relegation and maybe that measure is the real one, but the team was playing in superb mode until 4 weeks ago. They are a mixture between solid veterans and fresh youngsters. Paco Jemez (UD Las Palmas’ coach) has been able to manage the secret potion and the Canary team is playing quite well. They are quite aggressive at home and they are usually playing an appealing offensive style, scoring goals and enjoying in front of their home crowd.
UD Las Palmas has shown to be a quite dangerous team playing on counter-attack style. They have fast and dynamic players who do a quick and passing game style very effective.
They will have a lot of absences. Some of them are crucial misses: Vitolo (offensive midfielder), Alvaro Cejudo (midfielder) and Barbosa (goalkeeper) are the most important ones, but they aren’t the only ones. Guayre (striker), Randy (offensive midfielder), Dani Carril (left defender) and Vicente Gomez (midfielder) won’t be available for this match.
The called squad is: Pignol, Ruyman, Samuel, David García, Josico, Perea, Sergio Suárez, Mauro Quiroga, Jorge, Pedro Vega, Aythami, Pindado, Javi Guerrero, Juanpe, Armiche, Jonathan Viera, David González, Quero and Raúl.

Wrong Odds

I can’t understand these odds on Over 2.5 goals in this game. UD Las Palmas is one of the craziest teams in the Spanish football due to their coach, Paco Jemez. He always wants to attack wherever they play and this style of playing is decisive for their current results.
Spanish Segunda is always tough to bet on goals due to the equality among teams, but betting on well selected Over can be very lucrative. CD Numancia is a hard nut to crack at home and I’m totally sure that UD Las Palmas will attack from the beginning of the match because they can’t defend during the whole game holding a low scoring result. Simply because they haven’t enough qualified defenders to keep far from their box to the rivals.
Beside, Barbosa (UD Las Palmas’ best goalkeeper) is injured and this is a big problem for Canaries. Pindado (goalkeeper) is an average goalkeeper who stays in bad form. He was the responsible of conceded goals against FC Barcelona B.
On the other hand, CD Numancia will have the important miss of Nano. Nano is an offensive midfielder who is playing in the left back because of the lack of true left defender. So, the substitute is rather deficient, Dani Lopez. He can suffer too much against Jonathan Viera in the wing.
CD Numancia has several players who belong to higher division. Barkero, Cedric and Garmendia can damage easily the weak Canary defense, mainly by free kicks close to box. I expect an open match, so I can’t miss this chance to bet on these odds. Maybe, the right bet would be the home win, but UD Las Palmas is the most unpredictable team in the Spanish Segunda and they can cause problems to CD Numancia, mainly in the left wing and their always nervous goalkeeper, Eduardo.

Match preview: Kuwait – China

Kuwait certainly expects to play in the next phase of this tournie considering the fact they’re in the group with Qatar, Uzbekistan and China. Striker Bader Al-Mutawa is questionable after injuries his foot in the training, but the doctors will surely do their best to get him ready for this match. Kuwait is in good form lately, being undefeated in the last 12 matches, even winning the Gulf Cup title last December, defeating the favored Saudi Arabia in the finals.

Rejuvenating the squad

China has sent a very young squad to this competition and there squad contains of only one player who isn’t playing in the domestic championship – Schalke’s midfielder Hao Jumin. Coach Gao Hongbao has decided to leave some more experienced players such are Shao Jiavi, Zeng Zhi or Li Weifeng at home, and test out some younger players. China has never won the AFC Asian Cup, but Hongbao managed to record a few excellent results lately, as his side won against Latvia, Estonia and FYR Macedonia.

Both sides efficient lately

This is a clash of two very young sides and exactly due to that we can expect both of them to be dark horses of this tournament. If they manage to catch a good rhythm, they can turn out to be unpleasant for all other rivals. In my view, Kuwait is a slight favorite but the results these two sides have been recording lately are suggesting me that this match could go over 2.5 and the odds are just excellent. Good luck!

Match preview: Inter – Napoli

Possible starting line-up: Castellazzi; Maicon, Lucio, Cordoba, Chivu; Zanetti, Cambiasso, Thiago Motta; Stankovic; Milito, Pandev. Inter have new coach, the former Milan`s coach Leonardo. As You probably know, President Morati sacked Rafa Benitez after he asked for new acquisitions. But I doubt things could be changed now. Even more as Inter is without some key players. The first goalkeeper Julio Cesar is injured and Castellazzi will be between the posts. In the defense Samuel is out. The main creative Sneijder is also out due to injury. Finally, the best scorer Eto`o is suspended.

Just three points from the top

Possible starting line-up: De Sanctis; Grava, Cannavaro, Aronica; Maggio, Gargano, Pazienza, Dossena; Hamsik, Lavezzi; Cavani. Napoli is playing excellent this season. They are sharing the second place with just three points to the leader Milan. The team is almost complete for this trip and I am sure the coach Walter Mazzarri will not be afraid of the actual champion. I expect he will try to make a positive result at Meazza.

Inter in deep troubles

Inter is in deep troubles, Napoli is playing fantastic season. So, I don`t understand the bookmakers. To offer such odds for Napoli win is strange. Yes, I am well aware of the fact that Inter is actual Italian and European champion, but that was something different. The situation at the moment is very different. It will be just first match for the new coach Leonardo. He is not familiar with the players and it is very important. Plus, Inter will miss the four key players, the first goalkeeper, one of two main central defenders, the main creative and the best goalscorer. In situation like this I believe Napoli is the favourite here, not Inter. Napoli won the last three matches (against Palermo, Genoa and Lecce) and the players confidence is on the highest level at the moment. Plus, Napoli together with Milan are the best away teams in Serie A with 17 points. Cavani together with Hamsik and Lavezzi are very dangerous and I think Napoli is able to make a surprise here.
