Liverpool FC is placed in 11th spot (22 points, 6W – 4D – 7L) in the English Premier League. They have played 17 matches and they also have two suspended games, so they can climb up spots in the League table when they fight for the points in these games.
Their last game was played on 11th December, so they have had two weeks for thinking on that defeat against Newcastle United (3-1) away from home. They need one victory to recover their hopes to continue climbing in the EPL. Liverpool FC won clearly their last three matches at home.
LFC – Chelsea FC (2-0). LFC – WHU (3-0). LFC – Aston Villa (3-0).
The called squad for this match is: Reina, Johnson, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Konchesky, Kuyt, Meireles, Lucas, Rodriguez, Gerrard, Torres, Jones, Kelly, Aurelio, Poulsen, Cole, Ngog, Babel, Agger and Shelvey.
They will recover their great connection Steven Gerrard, who returns to the team, and Fernando Torres upfront. They will also recover Daniel Agger (central defender). However they will have the absence of James Carragher (central defender) who is injured.

Wolves? Maybe Teddy Bears

Wolverhampton Wanderers is the rock bottom (15 points, 4W – 3D – 11L) in the English Premier League. They lost their last match against Wigan Athletic (1-2, a direct contender) at home. This defeat has sent to a dramatic situation in the last spot of the League table.
Mick McCarthy’s team is playing worse than last season. They used to be an aggressive team which did a great pressure in every inch of the pitch, but they have a lot of injury issues this season. They won’t have the help of several key players for this match. Karl Henry, Jody Craddock, Kevin Doyle (mainly these three players), together Mancienne and Mouyokolo will be sidelines for this encounter.
The called squad for this match is: Hennessey, Zubar, Stearman, Berra, Elokobi, Foley, Edwards, Milijas, Hunt, Ward, Ebanks-Blake, Hahnemann, Fletcher, Jarvis, Jones, Bent, Mujangi Bia and Doherty.
They will recover Kevin Jarvis and Stephen Fletcher will come back into the starting eleven against Liverpool FC.

Solid at Home

Liverpool FC is showing solid performances at home lately. I don’t think current Wolves can damage Liverpool FC’s defensive system. Watching the important match which they have on Saturday against West Ham United away from home and knowing Mick McCarthy, he can do several changes in the game against Liverpool FC, resting key players for that decisive match against WHU at Upton Park.
So, I expect Mick McCarthy field an offensive team to reserve a more serious team for Upton Park. They will try to play opener than other visits to Anfield Road and I think Liverpool will find more spaces behind Wolves’ back line. Maybe this thought is a wish more than a reality, but Wolves would have to do a perfect match to clinch something at Anfield.
Liverpool FC have improved so much, at least at home, in last matches, Hodgson put Meireles in the right spot at last and Reds started to create football. I think Gerrard’s return is a great news and Steven, Meireles, Kuyt and Fernando Torres can sweep and trash Wolves easily, at least these Wolves.
I think Reds will play at full strength to farewell this year in front of their loyal home crowd. Bookmakers know perfectly this situation and they have placed the handicap line on AH (-1.5). Maybe it’s a big line after watching Liverpool FC’s season so far, but I strongly think Liverpool are going to manage good results in the following matches with their best players ready to play. I will invest my low stake due to this high handicap for current Liverpool FC. I think Reds will be capable of covering, but I prefer to be cautious with Roy Hodgson’s team.

Liverpool will be looking to bounce back after the shameful defeat against Newcastle and a home game against 17th place Fulham looks the perfect opportunity. Furthermore, captain Steven Gerrard is set to return after a month on the sidelines, while Torres is fresh after being rested in midweek on the Europa League game. In contrast with their away record, where they lost 6 of their 9 games, the Reds have been much more impressive on Anfield with 17 points (5W, 2D, 1L), a tally beaten only by Chelsea and Man. Utd and 3 clean sheets in a row.

Tough season

Fulham is sitting just above the relegation zone on goal difference with a record of 2 wins, 10 draws and 5 defeats. The guests are winless in the last 7 rounds, are yet to win a game away from home this season (the last victory on the road came on the opening day of the 2009/10 season) and have never won at Liverpool (5 defeats and 4 goaless draws in the last decade).

Hodgson against his former side

Fulham are traditionally very poor on the road and in the absence of Bobby Zamora and Moussa Dembele they are hopeless in attack, and adding the fact that Liverpool boss Hodgson knows them in detail, they don`t have too many reasons to be confident. All they can hope for is a goaless draw, but they are less solid at the back than on Hodgson era, while Liverpool have scored 10 goals on their last 4 league games and have talismanic captain Gerrard back in the squad.

So much has been written about Liverpool and all its business dealings, managers, players, and poor results, that it is easy to forget about the basic stuff: the football.

To my eye it hasn`t been pretty or even that effective when you consider the players at their disposal, but recently there have been signs of some progress. The confidence of playing behind a red hot striker (Torres) is not present at the moment, nor is there the dynamism of Stevie G to feed off, but some solid efforts have been put in by the `supporting` cast of late, and Liverpool can be expected to build on that, albeit slowly.

Home form : 4-2-1 GF12 GA6. Good enough when facing opposition that have won only 1 from 7 on the road and scored only 5 in response to 15.

Houllier Hopes

Ashley Young misses this one after picking up his 5th yellow of the season in the Cup midweek. Big loss. Key player.

Villa have appeared lacking in ideas in their recent matches after showing such verve and vitality vs Man Utd, and despite throwing away that 2 goal lead so tamely that day, there was a lot to like for the future.

Losing 2-0 at Blackburn was poor, but Rovers are tough to beat at Ewood.
Arsenal took a quick lead last week, and again Villa came back with goals from rising star Ciaran Clark, but it wasn`t enough.
All a bit headless to me. Lacking the Captain`s role on the pitch.

Midweek they fell to their 3rd defeat in a row with the 2-1 loss to rivals Birmingham in the Carling Cup, and that can`t have done any good for morale.

All in all there is not a lot to really get excited about with Villa at the moment. Houllier has never been a `energy` driven manager, and like Benitez or Hodgson, you wonder how he rallies the troops in times of strife.

Goals are not flowing well for them, and there is the lack of consistency, plus the loss of 12pts from winning positions thus far that all points to another tough match tonight.

They have the talent : Albrighton, Agbonlahor, Carew, Clark, Downing, etc….so opportunities will be created, but they need to be taken and defended.

Both to Score

It`s not a game that inspires much in the way of enthusiasm, as both sides are still finding their way. Liverpool`s form at Anfield is the deciding factor when compared with Villa`s very poor away results.

Neither side`s strikers are in top form, while both defences have seen massive lapses too many times already to be deemed dependable.

The hosts have better momentum after gaining progress in Europe midweek, while Villa have to stop the rot of 3 defeats in row turning into 4.

Some tipsters have this as an easy Home win, but for Liverpool in its current condition there is no such thing as `easy`.

With Hills the only bookie over 2.00 on Both to Score, I`ll have a punt on that as Villa have yet to keep a clean sheet away, while Liverpool have only managed 3 from 7 clean sheets at Home.

So, I basically consider this game to be a `will Villa score` bet, and from that point of view I see myself getting 2.05 on Villa to score, when the actual best odds on that are only 1.70.

Not an exact science, I know, but you have to take a position at some point.

Disappointing campaign for Steaua so far, as at half of the season, they are on a modest 7th place, 10 points behind leaders Otelul. So no wonder that they put all their faith in the Liverpool game, as a win will leave them in a great position to qualify before the last round. Coach Lacatus is expected to field a 4-2-3-1 module, with a decent holding midfield pair, Bicfalvi-Ricardo and some quick players in attack, such as Tanase, Surdu, Stancu and Szekely. No deep forward, as Kapetanos is suspended and Bilasco is ineligible for Europa League games, so you can expect a counter-attack tactic and a big reliance on Stancu, who scored 15 goals this season in all competitions (without his goals, Steaua would have been on the 17th spot in the league).

Almost qualified

Liverpool tops Group K with 8 points (2 wins and 2 draws), which means that a draw will be enough to secure the passage to the next stage of the competition. Roy Hodgson`s priority is the Premier League, where the Reds are stuck on mid-table (10th place) and their strategy was made clear when the experienced coach decided to give a rest to Fernando Torres, Dirk Kuyt, Raul Meireles, Glen Johnson and Paul Konchesky, while Carragher, Agger and Gerarrd are out injured. Which means that youngsters Kelly,Wilson, Pacheco or Shelvey will be given the chance to impress, alongside more routined players such as Cole, Babel, Jovanovici, Poulsen, Lucas, Kyrgiakos, Fabio Aurelio or Reina.

The satisfactory draw

The calculations are simple in this group. Liverpool is toping the group with 8 points, while Steaua is second with 5 points, 2 more than followers Utrecht and Napoli. A draw will be enough for the unmotivated Reds, while Steaua should push for the win, but could be content with a draw, assuming that Napoli won`t win in Holland. The reverse game at Anfield ended 4-1 for Liverpool, in a game in which they also used many subs, so you can question Steaua`s ability to gain all the points. I expect a draw with goals, most probably 1-1 and if there is someone who can score from Steaua, that is Bogdan Stancu at odds around 3.

Liverpool has streaked a couple of wins after their horrible series but I still think they are not strong enough to defeat a Chelsea side, regardless of the fact they will be playing in front of their loyal fans, who will again fill out the stands at the Anfield to its full capacity. Coach Hodgson has more than an excellent team at his disposal that can be fit into anything he would like, and Rafa didn’t manage to take an advantage of it, while Hodgson still has enough time to make things right. Torres, Kuyt, Babel, Jovanovic, all those are big names playing for the Reds. Liverpool is out from the big four and currently doesn’t even belong in the top 10 being 16th in the tables, which is just humiliating for this side. I think that despite of a few good results lately, and home field advantage, they won’t manage to outpower Chelsea, which is simply too strong this season.

Very strong

Chelsea is an excellent side. Ancellotti has really created a team that many are afraid of. They’ll be arriving to face Liverool with the intention of winning and will be going for it from the minute on. Bane Ivanovic is currently in the main focus on their squad, as he scored 3 goals in 2 matches and everybody is interested to see whether this back can get on a scoring streak like Drogba or Anelka for example in the upcoming matches. This squad is just too good, which was proved both in EPL and CL, and their only letdown came against Newcastle in the cup, as they got eliminated there. My opinion is that they are capable and most likely will win their 9th game of the season in the league.

It is a derby

This is certainly a derby regardless of the current Liverpool’s situation and their position in the tables. Liverpool started getting out of troubles but unfortunately Chelsea isn’t the best team that would help them totally get out of it, but if they do, they will definitely boost their morale and probably continue in the same rhythm. My advice is still an away win though.

Possible starting line-up: Reina; Carragher, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos, Konchesky; Maxi Rodriguez, Lucas, Meireles, Cole; Gerrard; Torres.

Liverpool is playing the worst season. The fans are frustrated, they were hoping for the trophy. Many players were bought this Summer, like Joe Cole, Milan Jovanovic, Konchesky, Meireles, Poulsen and other. But the effect is zero. New manager Roy Hodgson is under big pressure as the results are poor. Liverpool have only one victory so far and that is why they are second, but from the bottom. For this match Hodgson will be without injured Kuyt, while Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger are doubtful.

Another hard season for Blackburn

Possible starting line-up: Robinson; Salgado, Nelsen, Givet, Olsson; Pedersen, N`Zonzi, Jones, Dunn, El Hadji Diouf; Kalinic. Blackburn manager Sam Allardyce is laso having some problems with missing players. First of all, he will be without suspended Chris Samba. Plus, Keith Andrews, Vince Grella and Jason Roberts are out due to injuries. And Ryan Nelsen is doubtful. Blackburn is currently three points better then Liverpool. They are in solid form as they have only one defeat in the last five matches.

Both out of form

It is clear both teams are out of form. But for Blackburn it is not a catastrophe, team have 9 points after first 8 rounds and manager Sam Allardyce is not under pressure. But the situation is quite opposite in Liverpool. With just six points, it is very bad situation. The pressure is not big, the pressure is enormous on the manager Hodgson and the players. But I don`t see anything could be changed. Liverpool players are totally lost on the pitch, only some individual action can make something more. On other side Blackburn already played 1:1 with Manchester City. So, I believe they are able to repeat that against Liverpool. Poor Liverpool will have a lot of troubles with Blackburn. And I think the match will finish with a draw.

Everton started bad this season in Premier league and so far register only one win in last round after being 6 round winless with 3 draws and 3 losses.Theire main problem is offence which shine only in match with Manchester United scoring 3 goals but also 3 goals in all other matches together. On the other side defence is OK and I expect cautious play today since another loss will be very bad for them.

Veru bad form

Liverpool also had very bad start probably one of the worst in theire history and they are under pressure. They have same 1 win 3 draws and 3 losses like Everton and are neighbours on the bottom of the league where they don’t belong.Theire famous defence is very bad this year and attack is impotent without Torres, but he will maybe start this game since is reported as fit.On the other side they receive big blow by Kuiyt injury in meadweak international game for Holland.

Game of the season

This is Liverpool derby and for both teams most important games of the season. They are in similar bad situation on the bottom and this game is crucial for both.Who wins this game will leave the crisis and other will go deeper in it. That’s why I think both will be cautious since Everton has bad stats with Liverpool on home soil loosing last 3 games while Liverpool has problems in attack since Kuyjt will miss and form is doubtfull. This two are only players that scored for Liverpool in that 3 games which they won on Everton field. Defences are better part of the teams and last 7 games between them ended under.I will go with that outcome again.

Probable starting eleven: Vorm; Nesu, Wuytens, Schut, Cornelisse; Asare, Lensky, Silberbauer; Duplan, Van Wolfswinkel, Danso.

Utrecht started the European campaign with a draw against Napoli at San Paolo in Naples. It is a good result, no doubt about that. But even better result was in the last qualification round. Utrecht was some kind of outsider against Scotish giant Celtic. After Celtic won 2:0 at home everybody thought Utrecht is out, but the Dutch team played one unbelievable performance in the second leg and won with 4:0. Coach Coach Ton du Chatinier has no big problems with injuries ahead of this game.

Another bad season

Probable starting eleven:
Reina; Kelly, Carragher, Skrtel, Agger; Poulsen, Meireles; Kuyt, Gerrard, Joe Cole; Torres.

Liverpool started the European campaign with a victory over Steaua Bucharest with 4:1 at Anfield. The goals were scored by Joe Cole, Lucas Leiva and Davide N`Gog (two goals). But this result is one of the rare Liverpool successful results. In the Premiership Liverpool is playing awful, coach Roy Hodgson is under big pressure, the fans are not satisfied etc.

Guests are better

I was waiting to see the formation that Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson will use today. When I saw that he intent to play with the best players including the captain Steven Gerrard, best striker Fernando Torres and Dirk Kuyt, then I think Liverpool is closer to victory. The quality is on their side, so Utrecht can`t resist. The only advantage for Utrecht is home ground, but Liverpool players are very experienced and that shouldn`t be a problem.

Liverpool come into this match under the greatest of pressure and indeed with a real sense of depression hanging around the club and how they respond now will tell me everything. This week hasn`t been any better for Roy Hodgson, who must wish he was back at Fulham where life was simple. He watched his side get beaten by arch rivals Manchester United this past Sunday, and then in midweek, in front of a home crowd, watched the team slump to a Carling Cup exit at the hands of Northampton Town. Liverpool did rest a lot of the first choice starters for the league cup game, but this is now already crunch time for the club that was once the dominant powerhouse in England. Hodgson will need very badly for Joe Cole to be the playmaker he was brought in to be, and for Torres to quit being so goal shy. Liverpool aren`t solid, and their defence has let pretty much everyone have their way with them. People still don`t want to believe that Liverpool can be this bad, but I think they are. The clubs` situation is a mess.

Solid

Like Liverpool, Steve Bruce`s side come into this match having being dumped out of the Carling Cup. But, they lie 11th, and are also on the back of a very deserved draw against Arsenal last weekend and that result followed their fantastic home win against Manchester City as well so we have massive respect for Sunderland in this one and totally believe they can achieve something here. Gyan, the Ghanain most of you will know from his World Cup heroics, is a new addition to the club and has already netted the first time he pulled on a Sunderland jersey. There might be a bit of a partnership in the making there for the Black Cats, as he plays up front with Darren Bent, who is a danger to any defence he plays against. Although Sunderland look like they will let Liverpool score, I think it will come down to how many Sunderland can score themselves.

Without a winner

Liverpool are priced at around 1.45 and I just don`t think that is worth it at this point with a team that looks shaky, against a visiting team that is going to fight hard throughout. I expect Sunderland to push Liverpool and make them fight hard for a share of the points to end a truly miserable week for Liverpool. Take X or consider a bet on Sunderland with a handicap.

Manchester United has disappointed their fans in their CL opener of the new season by only drawing 0:0 to Scottish Rangers at their Old Trafford. Although Sir Alex Ferguson used a bit weaker squad than the usual, leaving players like Van der Sar, Vidic or Berbatov on the bench, nobody still expected them to be unable to use their domination on the pitch and convert it into goals. That still didn’t happen so the Red Devils’ squad will have to make up for the 2nd consecutive disappointment (last weekend wasted a 3:1 lead against Everton in the added time), in front of their fans and there’s no dilemma Ferguson will use the best lineup possible.

European success

Liverpool squad won at home in the first match of the EL group stages against Romanian Steaua by as much as 4:1 at home. Their performance wasn’t as convincing as the final result is showing but still the Reds should get the credit as they won convincingly using mostly their reserves, so they played without Torres, Kuyt, Gerrard or Jovanovic amongst others. In the EPL they’re not too brilliant, being in the mid-table area at the moment and I believe they will hardly get a chance to enter the race for the title this year.

The derby for a better Sunday afternoon

One of the biggest derbies of EPL will be played this weekend in Manchester, when the hosting United will face Liverpool. If we exclude the letdown they had a few days ago at home against Rangers, the Red Devils have been playing terrific at the Old Trafford so far this season, having 2 wins out of 2 matches with a 6:0 goal difference. Liverpool showed all of its inferiority in their only derby match played so far this season, losing to United’s city rival Man.City on the road by comfortable 3:0, while last week they barely recorded a 0:0 draw away in Birmingham. Manchester will be with the full squad and since they’re currently a lot better team I think they will celebrate here quite easily, and thus I am going for a bet on the home win.
