Australian open picks

Murray reached the finals here last year before falling to Federer in straight sets. Can he repeat that performance and maybe win his first Grand Slam? All of England would love that!

Beck is a solid player, but lacks a bit of stamina which isn’t good when playing Murray. He has a good forehand, but no weapons to push Murray around the court. Murray will drive Beck nuts in this match and should move on without much trouble.

Soccerpunt Pick – Murray in 3 sets

David Nalbandian (ARG) vs. Lleyton Hewitt (AUS)

This is clearly the match of the first round, especially with Hewitt playing in front of his home crowd. Nalbandian is playing well, but you can never be too sure how fit or healthy he is. Hewitt hasn’t played since September of last year and is coming back from an injury so his health is in question as well.

These two have some history…Hewitt is 3-2 against Nalbandian and beat him in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open back in 2005 10-8 in the fifth set! I have to give a slight edge to Nalbandian because of Hewitt’s health, but if the Aussie crowd can get behind him and will him to victory. I can’t wait to watch this one!!

Soccerpunt Pick – Nalbandian in 4 or 5 sets

Roger Federer (SUI) vs. Lukas Lacko (SVK)

Federer could be in for a couple of difficult matches here in the first two rounds. Lacko is a zany guy who isn’t afraid to come in to the net and has a very good forehand. If/when Federer gets by him, he has to play Gilles Simon in the second round and he playing very well also. This is the first time in a long time that Federer could get seriously tested in the opening couple of rounds. On the other hand, Federer could play like Federer and just blow throw these guys, demonstrating what has made him the best of all time. Can’t wait!

Soccerpunt Pick – Federer in 3 tough sets

Kei Nishikori (JPN) vs. Fabio Fognini (ITA)

This is the first career meeting between the 21-year old Nishikori and the 23-year old Fognini. Nishikori made a name for himself a couple of years ago when he won a title in surprise fashion. He has been injured off and on and is now working with Brad Gilbert and IMG Bollettieri Tennis coach, Dante Bottini. He is feeling good and when he is on, he can beat the best. He just took down Marin Cilic and Alejandro Falls in Chennai and demonstrated why he can be such a threat.

Fognini isn’t going to hurt Nishikori, but he can run all day. Nishikori has to be patient and pretend like he is playing on clay. Just wait for his chances and then strike when he has the opportunity. He cannot get over-aggressive and has to remain focused. I look for Nishikori to win, but this will not be a short match.

Soccerpunt Pick – Nishikori in 4 sets

Roger Federer is finally back to Stockholm where he hasn’t played since 2000. to finally fulfill his promise he’s been giving all these years that he’ll again return to play there. I believe he has got bigger goals than just to return to Sweden and keeping his word, as I’m sure he’ll certainly try to take the trophy, unlike Shanghai last week, when he missed it by a little losing to Murray in 2 sets in the finals. However, Federer’s dominance on the court is present even when he’s not playing at a top level, and I actually think he will be in a great mood today no matter of the form, just like he’s been against Dent when he won in 2 easy sets in his first match here.

No major weaknesses

According to a majority’s opinion, Stanislas Wawrinka is one of the rare complete players on the tour, without major flaws and disadvantages in his game, always playing solid and at a high level. To tell the truth, he did have a notable drop in form at the start of this year and a few injuries but luckily he started playing excellent this summer again. His last match against Haase in Stockholm was extremely demanding but Wawrinka manage to use his dangerous one-handed backhand and prove who the boss on the court is, while previously he didn’t struggle much against Seppi beating him in 2 sets. He’s motivated and brave enough to confront Roger.

The Swiss collision

If there are any two players on the tour that know each other well, those are usually the ones coming from the same country, in this case two best players of Switzerland are the ones will be meeting today. In their pro career, they met 8 times, and Wawrinka himself probably forgot his sole win against Fed, even though that wasn’t too long ago (2009. Monte Carlo). Since then, Fed won the previous 4 clashes without losing a single set and a similar thing could happen here as well but I still believe that considering the low total, it’s really worth chasing the over as Wawrinka is definitely capable and knowledgeable enough to give Federer a hard time and put up huge resistance, as they’re old countrymates and friends, after all and have practiced together a lot in the past. Plus, Federer isn’t in his top shape. Good luck!

Djokovic is playing terrific at this USO, and it’s clear that despite the difficulties caused by the strong wind, he plays each move with lots of sense and the best proof for that is that he’s won all of his matches except the first one in straight sets. We shouldn’t take that first match seriously as he played Troicki, and in those kinds of matches one can never know if he will play seriously or will relax a bit. The only rival that could’ve troubled him so far was Gael Monfils, but he totally failed to prove his quality in that clash so Nole is entering these semis not too tired. It’s maybe about time he beats Federer and pays him back for the recent loss in Toronto. I think Nole will probably wait for Federer’s often errors at the start of the match so he can attack him before the Swiss finds him rhythm, or else he won’t end up well.

Inspired in the U.S.

Roger Federer has always played well at the North-American tournies, and now his game looks the best in a while, and he hasn’t lost a set and due to his greatness and primarily the knowledge and despite that he is more vulnerable than before, this living tennis legend still looks unstoppable. One has to play with great tactics against him, and using all the weapons that Novak should already know by now, cause despite all the praises for Roger, we all know he isn’t what he once used to be but somehow he still manages to pull out the best from his sleeve. Before USO, he won Cincinnati, when Fish took one set from him in the finals, and according to that, Novak should have a few opportunities to do the same, if not even something more.

Hard to tell who is better

At this USO, Djokovic and Federer are both in great forms, and this will clearly be a lot more impressive semifinals than the other one when Nadal will meet with Youzhny, and where the Spaniard is a clear favorite to win. But, here it’s all possible. Federer respects Novak’s game a lot and knows well that Nole has always been able to give him a hard time, and he can still remember the last year’s Basel finals, when Djokovic beat him the last time, and he did it in Roger’s home town. Recently in Toronto semifinals, Novak needed some luck and courage, and let’s hope he’ll have it this time, so knowing how he’s played so far at this US Open, I am sure he can take at least one set away from him, if not more, so my advice here is a tight match and the over 38.5 games. Good luck!

Robin Soderling is one terrific server with an excellent movement on the court, which he demonstrated so far in the previous matches at this year’s USO. Although he rarely goes to the net, he did have a few nice moves there so he is certainly much more diverse in his game compared to the last few seasons. He does well on every surface, having 16 wins out of his 25 matches on hard this year. All in all, he is a pretty disciplined player, having the only crisis in the first round here against a bit less quality Haider-Maurer, who took him into 5 sets. In every next match he played, he was looking better, which will be visible this time too.

Always solid at the USO

Roger Federer somehow always manages to get good results at the USO, he loves playing that tournie and the American crowd loves him, so when his never-ending ambitious character and high-quality play are added into the picture, we come to a conclusion that it’s no surprise he hasn’t dropped a single set at this year’s USO so far, only playing one tie break, in the last clash against Melzer. The Swiss is defending points from the last year’s finals when he was defeated to Del Potro in a phenomenal match, and last year he actually knocked Soderling out of the tournie, so now it is maybe time for revenge.

The history repeats itself

Same situation as the last year: same opponents, the USO quarterfinals, and again I expect the same struggle for both players. Both of them are playing well, and are powerful serves, and it’s certain Soderling wishes for a bit different outcome of this match this time, so he will definitely show all that he’s got on the court. How well they know each other proves the fact they met as many as 14 times, and Federer lost only twice, but it’s a fact Soderling has been giving him a hard time in almost every one of their meetings over the past 2,3 years. I don’t doubt the match between them will last long this time again, so my bet goes on the over. Good luck!

This joyful Cypriot got the sympathies from the Cincinnati crowd with his terrific performance, especially in the last match against world number 1 Rafael Nadal, when he played outstanding drop shots, and returned impossible Rafa’s shots. He is a very brave player and it seems like he doesn’t care much who is on the other side of the net as he always gives his best and plays with a full strength. His shots are strong and precise and I think this is his moment of excellent tennis, which can get him to the finals. On hard his record this year is 23-8 which just proves his great abilities and physical condition that is at a high level.

One match and the semis is there

The living tennis legend, Roger Federer, is really treated well by the miss fortune. It sounds incredible but it’s true: The Swiss entered these semifinals by only playing 1 match in total, and it was the last one against Davydenko. Federer ended his first match against Istomin after not even completing the first set, leading 5-2 when the Uzbek retired, while his next match wasn’t even played as Kohlschreiber retired it before it started due to a shoulder injury. And there we have Roger in the semis again, with the smallest efforts possible. His current form is not what it used to be in his best days, but it’s clearly enough that he gets far at each tournament, a bit due to his rivals’ fear but more cause of his skill and luck. However, I think he will be stopped before the finals this time.

Brave Baggy in the finals

I believe that if Baghdatis shows the same game as he did against Rafa Nadal last night, he won’t have to worry about winning this match. Currently Nadal is certainly a better player than Federer even though he isn’t in the best form either, but if Marcos managed to defeat Nadal I believe even the great Fed won’t mess his attempt to win the title here. The Cypriot is a very clever player and easily adaptable to his opponents, so I think with the odds given it’s a great opportunity for some more value on today’s betting card. I am going on Baggy to win. Good luck.
