Murray reached the finals here last year before falling to Federer in straight sets. Can he repeat that performance and maybe win his first Grand Slam? All of England would love that!

Beck is a solid player, but lacks a bit of stamina which isn’t good when playing Murray. He has a good forehand, but no weapons to push Murray around the court. Murray will drive Beck nuts in this match and should move on without much trouble.

Soccerpunt Pick – Murray in 3 sets

David Nalbandian (ARG) vs. Lleyton Hewitt (AUS)

This is clearly the match of the first round, especially with Hewitt playing in front of his home crowd. Nalbandian is playing well, but you can never be too sure how fit or healthy he is. Hewitt hasn’t played since September of last year and is coming back from an injury so his health is in question as well.

These two have some history…Hewitt is 3-2 against Nalbandian and beat him in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open back in 2005 10-8 in the fifth set! I have to give a slight edge to Nalbandian because of Hewitt’s health, but if the Aussie crowd can get behind him and will him to victory. I can’t wait to watch this one!!

Soccerpunt Pick – Nalbandian in 4 or 5 sets

Roger Federer (SUI) vs. Lukas Lacko (SVK)

Federer could be in for a couple of difficult matches here in the first two rounds. Lacko is a zany guy who isn’t afraid to come in to the net and has a very good forehand. If/when Federer gets by him, he has to play Gilles Simon in the second round and he playing very well also. This is the first time in a long time that Federer could get seriously tested in the opening couple of rounds. On the other hand, Federer could play like Federer and just blow throw these guys, demonstrating what has made him the best of all time. Can’t wait!

Soccerpunt Pick – Federer in 3 tough sets

Kei Nishikori (JPN) vs. Fabio Fognini (ITA)

This is the first career meeting between the 21-year old Nishikori and the 23-year old Fognini. Nishikori made a name for himself a couple of years ago when he won a title in surprise fashion. He has been injured off and on and is now working with Brad Gilbert and IMG Bollettieri Tennis coach, Dante Bottini. He is feeling good and when he is on, he can beat the best. He just took down Marin Cilic and Alejandro Falls in Chennai and demonstrated why he can be such a threat.

Fognini isn’t going to hurt Nishikori, but he can run all day. Nishikori has to be patient and pretend like he is playing on clay. Just wait for his chances and then strike when he has the opportunity. He cannot get over-aggressive and has to remain focused. I look for Nishikori to win, but this will not be a short match.

Soccerpunt Pick – Nishikori in 4 sets

This joyful Cypriot got the sympathies from the Cincinnati crowd with his terrific performance, especially in the last match against world number 1 Rafael Nadal, when he played outstanding drop shots, and returned impossible Rafa’s shots. He is a very brave player and it seems like he doesn’t care much who is on the other side of the net as he always gives his best and plays with a full strength. His shots are strong and precise and I think this is his moment of excellent tennis, which can get him to the finals. On hard his record this year is 23-8 which just proves his great abilities and physical condition that is at a high level.

One match and the semis is there

The living tennis legend, Roger Federer, is really treated well by the miss fortune. It sounds incredible but it’s true: The Swiss entered these semifinals by only playing 1 match in total, and it was the last one against Davydenko. Federer ended his first match against Istomin after not even completing the first set, leading 5-2 when the Uzbek retired, while his next match wasn’t even played as Kohlschreiber retired it before it started due to a shoulder injury. And there we have Roger in the semis again, with the smallest efforts possible. His current form is not what it used to be in his best days, but it’s clearly enough that he gets far at each tournament, a bit due to his rivals’ fear but more cause of his skill and luck. However, I think he will be stopped before the finals this time.

Brave Baggy in the finals

I believe that if Baghdatis shows the same game as he did against Rafa Nadal last night, he won’t have to worry about winning this match. Currently Nadal is certainly a better player than Federer even though he isn’t in the best form either, but if Marcos managed to defeat Nadal I believe even the great Fed won’t mess his attempt to win the title here. The Cypriot is a very clever player and easily adaptable to his opponents, so I think with the odds given it’s a great opportunity for some more value on today’s betting card. I am going on Baggy to win. Good luck.

The Americans have the qualification issue in their hands. With a win tomorrow they will be 100% qualified to the eliminatory stage, no matter the result from the other game. They could also qualify only with a draw, but this means England should lose to Slovenia so it’s a pretty long shot. Coach Bradley said he’s trying to motivate his players and to make them play with patience against an Algeria squad who will probably try to defend and hit them on counters. USA was one of the nicest surprises of this WC so far, playing like a real team, despite not winning any game so far. Two draws so far who could easily turn into wins, but this was denied by the post (against England) and by the referee (against Slovenia).

The desert foxes

Algeria was far from being impressive so far. They were a defensive minded team and tried to get lucky on counters. They have lost against Slovenia and luckily drew against England. This draw could be very deceiving for those who didn’t watched the game and it could induce the thought Algeria posses a great defense. False. England was so poor and its players were similar to some pieces of wood, this making the Algerians job very easy. They need a win in order to qualify further.

USA to win

I believe the Americans will have the edge tomorrow and, if they will not lose their heads and keep putting pressure on the Algerian defense, they will succeed. Also, the Algerians played very dirty so far, with many harsh fouls, unsanctioned by the refs. I think an alarm bell rang already and that kind of dumb tackles will be severely punished because allowing them could only jeopardize the opponents’ careers. I’m pretty surprised with the AH offered by the bookies, considering what both teams showed so far in the tournament but I will gladly take it and preserve half of my stake in case of an unwanted draw. Good luck!

On Friday, 11th of June, the World Cup will finally have its start. The opening game will be played at Johannesburg and it will oppose Mexico to South Africa, the host of this competition. This will be the first WC tournament held on African ground and that’s why the expectations are higher than usual regarding the African teams’ performances. South Africa is one of the teams who are expected “to do well” here, not especially because of their value or the level of their football, but mainly because they will probably benefit of the host nation statute. They weren’t impressive in their latest friendly games, playing against minnow teams, only Columbia ad Denmark being of a higher facture. They were receiving easy penalties against Guatemala and Colombia and I expect this trend to continue at the WC. It never happened for a host nation to fail to qualify from the group stage and, despite being the weakest team from their group, some games will probably be played behind the curtains. The referee in the first game will be a guy from Uzbekistan, so I wouldn’t be surprised by anything.

Prepared

Mexico was one of the first teams who started the preparations, playing no less than 8 friendly games in the last month. Coach Aguirre finally decided his squad for the WC and, despite some internal conflicts between him and Giovanni dos Santos (regarding the dropping from the squad of his brother Jonathan), they performed well against Italy. They are strong at the back, having many classy defenders who are playing in Europe and they could develop some fast attack using the pace of Vela and dos Santos. Anyway, their central midfield area doesn’t posses too much depth , this being their “Achilles heel”. Also, the central striker will be chosen between an out of form Franco or the grandpa Blanco. Not bright either…

Draw

I believe both teams will feel the pressure of the opening game and we will witness an ugly game, with a careful approach from both of the teams. Mexico is the better team, no doubt about it, but South Africa at home will be a hard nut to crack. A draw is in the cards for this game and, although I’m not a fan of betting on draws, I feel both teams will not be too disheartened by that outcome. Moderate stakes…
P.S. I almost forgot another plus for the South African players, who could also reduce the gap between the teams: the mighty vuvuzelas!
