FC Barcelona, “the strongest team in the world”, are overwhelming favourites to defeat FC Viktoria Plzeň in UEFA Champions League Group H on Wednesday but Josep Guardiola believes they are just the sort of underdogs that could trip the holders.

Barcelona
Coach Josep Guadiola

“The biggest problem for this match is that this is the Champions League and smaller clubs always pose problems for us”. This team have surprised me a lot because they play very well, with real intensity. If you give them time they have the ability to play very well. We have to try to win tomorrow and get as many points as possible before going to San Siro.

Jakub Hora is a second striker, a great player; he’s a powerful guy with great vision. Also [Milan] Petržela and the other two left and right wingers are also very dangerous. I have to tell my players about the level these guys are at and to pay attention.

Weekend result
Saturday: Barcelona 3-0 Real Racing Club (Messi 11 68, Xavi 27)
Valdés; Alves, Piqué (Abidal 9), Puyol, Maxwell; Thiago, Xavi, Iniesta (Keita 72); Pedro (Adriano 74), Messi, Villa

• Lionel Messi moved ahead of László Kubala into second place on the club’s all-time scoring list as Barcelona stretched their unbeaten run to 18 games, going back to 30 April. Messi has registered 196 times for Barça and is now chasing César Rodríguez, who scored 235 club goals between 1942 and 1955.

Team news
Gerard Piqué limped off after nine minutes on Saturday with a hamstring complaint on the day Andrés Iniesta returned from a similar problem. Cesc Fàbregas and Alexis Sánchez have torn hamstrings and Ibrahim Afellay is out until the new year after suffering a knee ligament injury in training.

Plzeň
Coach Pavel Vrba

We’re up against the strongest team in the world and I hope we don’t concede too many. But we can’t go into the match thinking about how many goals we are going to let in. Messi is the best player in the world but Barcelona are not just about Messi – there’s also Xavi, Iniesta, lots of others. It’s going to be tough.

I watched the Racing match and it was typical Barcelona, with nine players going forward before switching to defence. It doesn’t matter who they face, they are always offensive and always want to win in style. Yet we’re capable of attacking and creating chances ourselves. We will try to take them by surprise. I have explained to the players that we can do it.

If we play with our heads held high we can have a good match. Every side wants to beat Barcelona and it serves as extra motivation. “Any Barcelona player would adapt to our team but I don’t think we can afford to sign any of them unfortunately”.

Weekend result
Friday: 1. FC Slovácko 1-3 Plzeň (Ondřejka 27; Bakoš 4, Petržela 39, Kolář 78)
Čech; Rajtoral, Čišovský, Bystroň, Limberský; Horváth, Jiráček (Ševinský 90), Petržela (Fillo 85), Kolář (Trapp 89), Ďuriš; Bakoš

• Vrba’s side claimed their first win in four games.

Team news
Václav Pilař missed Friday’s win after suffering concussion and a head wound in the Czech Republic’s play-off clinching 4-1 win in Lithuania last week.

It may only be matchday three, but AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is already thinking about winning UEFA Champions League Group H. However, he is determined not to underestimate an FC BATE Borisov side whose visit to San Siro offers a trip down memory lane for the Belarusian champions, and their boss Viktor Goncharenko.

Milan
Coach Massimiliano Allegri

Finishing top of the section is a bonus as it means you play a runner-up from another group in the round of 16, but for now we have to focus on this game; that is the most important thing for us. “BATE are well-organised and defend in an orderly manner. They have a young team which knows how to strike on the counterattack. Mateja Kežman is playing well and is a key player for them. We won’t underestimate them”.

We played well against Palermo on Saturday, with a good attacking dynamic and defensive movement. That game has revitalised our team after a difficult start to the season. Kevin-Prince Boateng has to prove his worth; he’s very important for Milan, but he may become even more crucial. No team has a player quite like him.

Weekend result
Saturday: Milan 3-0 US Città di Palermo (Nocerino 39, Robinho 55, Cassano 63)
Abbiati; Abate, Nesta, Thiago Silva (Bonera 34), Antonini; Nocerino, Van Bommel, Aquilani; Robinho (Emanuelson 66); Ibrahimović, Cassano (El Shaarawy 79)

• Facing his former employers, Antonio Nocerino scored his first goal for Milan as the Rossoneri extended their unbeaten run at San Siro in Serie A to 14 matches, since a 1-0 defeat by AS Roma on 18 December 2010. Robinho scored in his first appearance of the season after shaking off a toe injury

Team news
Gennaro Gattuso serves the third game of a four-match suspension. Robinho is back in contention but Mathieu Flamini is out with damaged knee ligaments. Thiago Silva did not train on Monday and Clarence Seedorf and Massimo Ambrosini are unlikely to start. Mark van Bommel was rated fit by Allegri, who hinted that Antonio Cassano will start up front on Wednesday. “He’s playing really well,” said the coach.

BATE
Coach Viktor Goncharenko

We will need to be very aggressive, well-organised in defence and courageous in attack. We will have to play as well as we can. Milan have many top-class players, with Zlatan Ibrahimović one of the best in their squad. When we played against them ten years ago [a game Goncharenko played in and only BATE's fifth European tie ever] it was a great experience – our first major experience, and the basis for building our club’s reputation in Europe.

“It was a seminal day. We didn’t know how to compete against those great players, like Maldini and Shevchenko. However, we have definitely gained more experience in European competition in the intervening years”. It’s not a ‘rematch’ and we can’t compare that game with tomorrow’s because each challenge has its own story.

Weekend result
Friday: FC Dinamo Minsk 0-2 BATE (Loshankov og 16, Bressan 69)
Gutor; Yurevich (Rudik 46), Radkov, Simić, Bordachev; M Volodko (Gordeychuk 58), Likhtarovich; Kontsevoi, Bressan, A Volodko; Kežman (Skavysh 79)

• Despite a host of injuries and Dmitri Baga missing through suspension, BATE claimed only their second win in eight league games, drawing five during that run. Renan Bressan forced the own goal before scoring the second.

Team news
Aleksandr Yurevich started against Dinamo Minsk, his first appearance since tearing ankle ligaments on 28 August. Goncharenko confirmed his availability and also said Yegor Filipenko had recovered from a back problem, and that Aleksandr Pavlov (torn adductors) is back in contention. However, Vitali Rodionov (knee ligaments) and Evgeni Kuntsevich (knee) remain out.

FC Porto coach Vítor Pereira warned his side not to let their guard down as they prepare to welcome surprise Group G frontrunners APOEL FC to the Estádio do Dragão. The Dragons narrowly won both fixtures when the sides met in the group stage two years ago, but having beaten FC Zenit St Petersburg and drawn at FC Shakhtar Donetsk, the Cypriot champions are not being taken lightly.

Porto
Coach Vítor Pereira

This is important, but for Porto every match is important; this is just one more game to win. APOEL surprised Zenit at home, then Shakhtar away. They have had the same coach for five years now and are gaining experience in the Champions League. “They are good on the counterattack and make the most of their opponents’ mistakes, as we saw against Shakhtar”.

Winning games is the ticket to the next phase of this tournament, so they are all important. Our objective is to win every match, but for now we’re only thinking about tomorrow’s match.

Weekend result
Saturday: CA Pêro Pinheiro 0-8 Porto (Defour 30, Walter 33 35 45 90+1, Djalma 40 57, Varela 61)
Bracali (Kadu 81); Săpunaru, Maicon, Mangala, Alex Sandro; Souza, Belluschi, Defour; Djalma (Cristian Rodríguez 65), Walter, Iturbe (Varela 46)

• Kadú, still more than a month off his 17th birthday, came on to become Porto’s youngest ever player as Pereira’s side coasted into the Portuguese Cup fourth round. Steven Defour and Djalma scored their first goals for Porto.

Team news
Kléber has not featured since injuring his left shoulder at Zenit, though Pereira expects him to be fit for Wednesday.

APOEL
Coach Ivan Jovanovič

“We won’t compromise our style. Porto will cause us problems, a team with a very fast attack, and we have to find solutions”. We’re happy to be back after two years and we’ll be up against a great team at a great stadium. At this point of the group stage it is very important. We’re in first place after two matches but it is still way too early. We’re happy with our first two games and want a good result tomorrow too.

[In the past two years] Porto have lost Bruno Alves, Raul Meireles and Falcao, but many of the other players are the same. Porto are a very important team on the European stage and we have to respect them. They are the strongest team in the group, and favourites to go through in first place.

Weekend result
Saturday: APOEL 0-1 AEL Limassol FC (Monteiro 56)
Chiotis; Poursaitides, Kaká (Belaid 64), Oliveira, Boaventura; Jahić, Nuno Morais, Hélio Pinto, Adorno (Charalambides 71); Aílton, Solari (Trickovski 58)

• APOEL were replaced at the top by AEL after their first defeat in nine games. Esteban Solari had a 40th-minute penalty saved by Matías Degra, meaning APOEL have still scored only two of their 25 goals this season before half-time.

Team news
Marcinho sat out the AEL defeat because of a thigh injury sustained in training last week and is unlikely to return. Paulo Jorge and Gustavo Manduca should recover from hamstring injuries to play.

FC Shakhtar Donetsk coach Mircea Lucescu is confident his team can make an impact in the UEFA Champions League this season despite taking just a point from the first two Group G matches. Though he knows the pressure is on against FC Zenit St Petersburg, Lucescu has seen enough since matchday two to give “me confidence that we can succeed in this tournament”.

Shakhtar
Coach Mircea Lucescu

“I don’t need to repeat how important this match is for us. It’s always difficult to play when you’re under pressure because of the importance of the game. Shakhtar need to win every match”. On Saturday, in the league against Tavriya [Simferopol], we showed extraordinary character to win in added time. Of course you can speak about luck, but the key to success was the unwavering confidence of my players.

We lost points in our previous Champions League matches because of mistakes. At the same time, the high quality of our play gives me confidence that we can succeed in this tournament. Our luck will return. Zenit are well prepared physically, that allows them to play quickly. They have excellent attacking players such as Danny.

Because Zenit try to play quickly, they often lose the ball. As for Shakhtar, we leave a lot of space in behind when we’re going forward. That gives the opposition the chance to counter, so we need to take fewer risks and be effective in attack.

Weekend result
Saturday: SC Tavriya Simferopol 1-3 Shakhtar Donetsk (Nazarenko 36; Luiz Adriano 28 90+5, Shevchuk 90+2)
Rybka; Srna, Rakitskiy, Chygrynskiy, Shevchuk; Hübschman (Fernandinho 67), Mkhitaryan, Douglas Costa (Seleznyov 62), Jadson (Alex Teixeira 56), Willian; Luiz Adriano

• Mircea Lucescu’s side extended their unbeaten start to their Super League defence to 13 matches with their third win in six away games. They have won seven out of seven at home.

Team news
Yaroslav Rakitskiy serves the second game of his two-match suspension.

Zenit
Coach Luciano Spalletti

It’s difficult to say which team has the best attack. I’ve spent two years at Zenit, and this side has scored more goals than anyone else in the Russian league. When I came to St Petersburg, there was already a strong team here, so I didn’t need to do a major overhaul.

“It’s very difficult to predict the result, but I’m sure my players will use their ability to try and control the game, and dictate the tempo. Shakhtar are a very skilful team, so Lucescu is right when he speaks about their commitment to attacking football” as they usually have five Brazilians in starting XI.

It was five years ago when I came to Donetsk with Roma. Shakhtar have maintained their style of play since. Back then, they already had many Brazilians in their squad and they played attractive football, as they still do. Now they have a new big advantage – this great new stadium. Shakhtar have always shown their best at home and in Europe since Lucescu has been in charge.

Weekend result
Saturday: Zenit 0-0 FC Dinamo Moskva
Malafeev; Anyukov (Luković 64), Lombaerts, Alves, Criscito; Denisov, Fayzulin, Shirokov; Danny, Bukharov (Rosina 83), Lazović (Zyryanov 58)

• Despite the goalless draw, Zenit have scored 21 goals in their last seven league matches and won 13 of their last 19 games in all competitions.

Team news
Aleksandr Anyukov came off against Dinamo with a knee problem and Aleksandr Kerzhakov has an ankle injury; neither have travelled to Donetsk. Sergei Semak was an unused substitute against Dinamo having not featured since July after breaking his fifth metatarsal.

There were contrasting opinions from the coaches ahead of the meeting of the bottom two in UEFA Champions League Group F. While Olympiacos FC’s Ernesto Valverde said the match is a “decisive one for both teams”, Borussia Dortmund counterpart Jürgen Klopp believes it is “not a final” as he worries over his paucity of options in attack for the visitors.

Olympiacos
Coach Ernesto Valverde

Tomorrow’s match is crucial, a decisive one for both teams. We’re playing at home and want to win our first points of the campaign. We have great respect for Dortmund, they are a very good side. They are the German champions and are equally as effective in defence and attack. They have the spirit of champions and it will be a very difficult match for us.

They attack and defend with 11 players. They take risks and we expect a free-flowing game. They have very good players, especially their forwards. Mario Götze is a special player, as is [Robert] Lewandowski. They were very unlucky to take just a point from their previous two matches. We have some injuries after Saturday’s match so we only have 18 or 19 players available.

Weekend result
Saturday: AEK Athens FC 1-1 Olympiacos FC (Leonardo 43; Mirallas 23)
Costanzo; Modesto, Marcano, Papadopoulos, Holebas; Orbaiz, Ibagaza (Makoun 90+1); Abdoun (Fetfatzidis 64), Fuster (Mellberg 46), Mirallas; Djebbour

• Olympiacos’s 100% start to the Super League campaign ended in a game both sides finished with ten men after François Modesto and Grigoris Makos were dismissed two minutes from time. The Greek champions have not kept a clean sheet in six outings this season.

Team news
David Fuster fractured his rib on Saturday and joins Francisco Yeste on the sidelines. Giannis Maniatis (groin) and Francisco Fejsa (ankle) are back in training while Vassilis Torossidis is recovering from a rib injury suffered on international duty.

Dortmund
Coach Jürgen Klopp

Olympiacos are experienced, technical and like to pressurise opponents. Individually they may not be that strong, but they are a good team. We only have one experienced forward. I can’t look anywhere else and I’m worried − I will field the players that are available.

It will be difficult but we’re not bothered by Olympiacos’ previous results against German opposition. Dortmund have one point and Olympiacos have none, but they were good against Marseille in their opener and could have won it. We have to start winning points and remain in contention, but tomorrow’s match is not a final. We don’t fear the atmosphere, we’re used to it.

Weekend result
Friday: SV Werder Bremen 0-2 Dortmund (Perišić 42, Owomoyela 71)
Weidenfeller; Owomoyela, Subotić, Hummels, Löwe; S Bender, Gündoğan (Kehl 74); Grosskreutz, Götze (Leitner 89), Perišić; Lewandowski (Barrios 88)

• Ivan Perišić opened the scoring but was then sent off two minutes into the second half as Dortmund won their third successive Bundesliga game. Former Bremen defender Patrick Owomoyela marked his maiden appearance this season with his first top-flight goal since 13 December 2009.

Team news
Marvin Bakalorz, who has not played this season because of an Achilles problem, is available but Mohamed Zidan and Marcel Schmelzer have not played since matchday one and two respectively due to thigh problems. Lucas Barrios (back) did not travel, while Owomoyela is sidelined with a groin injury.

Didier Deschamps expects Olympique de Marseille to put their domestic struggles behind them as the Group F leaders take on second-placed Arsenal FC on Wednesday. OM have won just once in ten Ligue 1 outings this season, yet have a perfect record from two UEFA Champions League matches and know a third successive victory would leave them handily placed to reach the knockout rounds.

Marseille
Coach Didier Deschamps

I won’t be satisfied with a draw. We have two games against Arsenal and need to take points as these six points could be decisive. I don’t want to compare their position in the Premier League with ours in Ligue 1, but Arsenal are a competitive team who can upset any team in Europe. The situation will be a bit clearer tomorrow; if we can take three points it would put us in the ideal position to reach the knockout rounds.

In the league we have to get positive results; in the Champions League it’s different – the players are a bit more relaxed and have less pressure on them. Since arriving here I’ve followed a footballing logic and I make decisions according to this logic. Tomorrow my players will be motivated but they need to have more confidence. We won’t have our backs against the wall like in the league and the players will be able to take more risks. Our aim is to get through the group, and to get as many points as we can to stay top of it.

Weekend result
Saturday: Toulouse FC 0-0 Marseille
Mandanda; Morel, N’Koulou, Diawara, Fanni; Cheyrou, Lucho, Kaboré, Amalfitano; Rémy (J Ayew 61), A Ayew (Gignac 83)

• Already without the suspended Alou Diarra, Mathieu Valbuena and César Azpilicueta, Marseille were further depleted following the 58th-minute dismissal of Charles Kaboré. OM have won more games in the UEFA Champions League (two out of two) than in Ligue 1 (one in ten) this season.

Team news
Rod Fanni and Jordan Ayew are suspended but Benoît Cheyrou (hamstring) and André-Pierre Gignac (groin) shook off knocks to face Toulouse. Stéphane Mbia (broken metatarsal) and Djimi Traoré (foot) are out.

Arsenal
Manager Arsène Wenger

We play with less pressure in Europe, a bit like Marseille. But there was great pressure on us at Udinese [in the play-offs] and that was our best game – I hope we can repeat it tomorrow. We’ve lost some games because of inexperience, some players were signed late and it takes time to adapt. As far as we’re concerned we are on our way back in the league, are on a good run and are not giving up on it. It would be disaster not to be in the Champions League at the end of the season.

We are playing in this competition for the 14th consecutive time. Our club wants to play at the highest level but the competition has increased in England. And we cannot afford to lose any more games as our group is very open, especially with a team like Dortmund who are not out of it yet. Marseille are strong defensively and dangerous on the counter; they are in a false position in the French league. They are also very strong in midfield – the midfield battle will be very important.

Weekend result
Sunday: Arsenal 2-1 Sunderland AFC (Van Persie 1 82; Larsson 31)
Szczęsny; Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs (Santos 51); Rosický (Benayoun 77), Song, Arteta, Walcott; Gervinho (Arshavin 68); Van Persie

• Robin van Persie broke the deadlock after 29 seconds, hit the woodwork and then struck the winner direct from a free-kick as Arsenal claimed their fourth win in five outings. Wenger’s team have collected only 22 points from their last 19 league matches, however.

Team news
Kieran Gibbs went off with a stomach muscle strain early in the second half against Sunderland and is out for around a fortnight. Apart from the long-term absentees – Jack Wilshere, Thomas Vermaelen and Abou Diaby (all ankle), Bacary Sagna (broken leg) and Sébastien Squillaci (calf) –Wenger says “everyone else is available”, including Aaron Ramsey after a hamstring strain.

André Villas-Boas believes Chelsea FC will face a team in transition when the Group E leaders welcome KRC Genk, mid-table in the Eerste Klasse, to Stamford Bridge. The Chelsea manager knows the Belgian champions well, having guided FC Porto to a 7-2 aggregate triumph over them in the UEFA Europa League play-offs last season, but is taking nothing for granted against a side still coming to terms with August’s change of coach and a sizable injury list.

Chelsea
Manager André Villas-Boas

Genk have a tremendous amount of injuries, which is unfortunate for them. They are also going through a period of change in many ways. After losing Frank [Vercauteren] they are taking time to get used to Mario [Been]. Not only the departure of Frank, but a few talented players leaving has also made things very difficult for them.

The opportunity is there [to get six points from back-to-back games against Genk]. The group is tight so anything can happen. It’s an unpredictable situation we want to fix by winning this game and putting ourselves in a better position. This is a very important game.

Both games [with Porto against Genk last season] were well contested, with chances for each side. We scored early in first game but it was tight and they had opportunities for a different result. They scored early in the second leg but we were lucky and got away with a good result. They were two competitive games.

Weekend result
Saturday: Chelsea 3-1 Everton FC (Sturridge 31, Terry 45+2, Ramires 61; Vellios 81)
Čech; Bosingwa, Ivanović, Terry, Cole; Mikel (Romeu 77), Lampard, Ramires (Malouda 65); Sturridge, Drogba, Mata (Anelka 77)

• John Terry made his 350th league appearance for Chelsea as the Blues extended their winning Premier League run to three matches. They have not kept a clean sheet in seven league games, however, their longest sequence since September 2003.

Team news
Villas-Boas confirmed that Ramires will not face Genk after sustaining a knee injury at the weekend. Michael Essien will be out of action until January after suffering knee ligament damage in pre-season training.

Genk
Coach Mario Been

It’s going to be a great game. Whether you are a player or a coach these are nights you train for, that you play for. Genk had a great season last year to reach this competition, did very well against Valencia [drawing 0-0] and had chances to draw with Leverkusen [when they lost 2-0]. We know we’ll have to have a really good night to get a good result against Chelsea.

I always expect the best. If we go into it thinking we cannot get anything out of this game then it’s better to stay at home. But a Dutchman is always positive and that’s something I want to project onto my team; we have to stick together and play, without being afraid of losing. We have to fight, give our all: and then you never know. Anything is possible but it will be difficult, that’s for sure for me.

Our fans are really positive, our 12th man. We won’t often end up playing Chelsea away so it’s a great occasion for them. We hope we can repay them with a result.

Weekend result
Saturday: KSC Lokeren OV 3-1 Genk (De Pauw 41, Gueye 79, Patosi 82; Benteke 10)
Köteles; Ngcongca, Masuero, Tőzsér, Durwael; Buffel (Ndabashinze 74), Vanden Borre, Hyland, De Bruyne (Ogunjimi 82); Vossen (Nwanganga 46), Benteke

• Abel Masuero made his competitive debut at centre-back as Genk suffered their third successive defeat after goalscorer Christian Benteke was sent off on 43 minutes. Benteke’s goal was the first Genk have scored in 235 minutes – their worst sequence since April/May 2009.

Team news
Elyaniv Barda returns after domestic suspension but Daniel Pudil (hamstring) and Nadson (ankle) are both doubtful. David Hubert (stomach), Jeroen Simaeys (broken toe) and Torben Joneleit (knee) are all sidelined.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Valencia CF are fully aware how important their two meetings over the next fortnight are, with Robin Dutt calling Wednesday’s first encounter “like a final”. His Leverkusen side are currently a point ahead of their visitors, but both coaches feel that whoever’s got the edge in two weeks’ time will be well-placed to progress from Group E.

Leverkusen
Coach Robin Dutt”

Valencia and us have both said that this game is like a final. If we don’t win at home against Valencia, we have to go there and get an away win”. My goal is to win a title with Leverkusen, but it won’t happen this year; there is a super-team [Bayern] preventing us. But I do believe that honest and diligent work will prevail in the end.

The public think there is a story for every club each season, and for Leverkusen people think it is that things did not work out between the new coach and the squad. There is maybe 15 to 20% truth that. I can live with this, but it does not do justice to the team. They are being presented in a bad light and that’s not fair on them.

Weekend result
Saturday: VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-2 Leverkusen (Reus 65, Herrmann 72; Reinartz 20, Schürrle 87)
Leno; Balitsch, Reinartz, Schwaab, Kadlec; Bender, Ballack (Rolfes 61); Sam (Derdiyok 68), Schürrle, Castro; Kiessling

• Gonzalo Castro was sent off with 22 minutes remaining, Leverkusen’s third red card in nine Bundesliga fixtures this term, before André Schürrle earned a point with his first league goal for the club.

Team news
Bastian Oczipka, out since breaking an ankle on loan at FC St Pauli on 19 February, is available but Tranquillo Barnetta, Renato Augusto and Michael Ortega are all out with knee injuries. First-choice keeper René Adler has been sidelined since undergoing knee surgery in mid-July. Fabian Giefer has not played since suffering concussion against 1. FSV Mainz 05 on 7 August.

Valencia
Coach Unai Emery

We still have four group matches to play. We think that Bayer Leverkusen will be our toughest competitors for second place. Whoever is second after the two next matches are obviously favourites, but then there are two more games to be played. We must not forget that we have not won a single match so far. Tomorrow, we play to win, that’s our only intention. We have to focus our energy on this single goal, we will have to reach our short-term goals.

“We are still in development. Players with a lot of international experience have left us, but now we have new hungry players who want to go as far as the generation before”. This is the chance tomorrow. But we also need patience and time and know that we have a lot of work to do. We have to remain stable in defence while at the same time improving our attack, there has to be a balance we still have to find. Players like [Juan] Mata are not here any more; many people are at the beginning of this new road.

Weekend result
Saturday: RCD Mallorca 1-1 Valencia (Hemed 90+3pen; Rami 38)
Guaita; Bruno, Rami, Víctor Ruíz, Alba; Pablo Hernández, Albelda, Canales, Parejo (Mehmet Topal 79), Piatti (Feghouli 63); Soldado (Aduriz 84)

In caretaker charge following the departure of Thorsten Fink, Heiko Vogel views the visit of co-leaders SL Benfica as the perfect opportunity for FC Basel 1893 to strengthen their position atop UEFA Champions League Group C. Opposite number Jorge Jesus knows the size of the challenge facing Benfica after Basel “showed what they are capable of” when they drew 3-3 with Manchester United FC on matchday two.

Basel
Coach Heiko Vogel

They are a team with lots of talented players who can make the difference. I could name [Óscar] Cardozo up front or Pablo Aimar − we’ve got to keep an eye on them. We’re in our stadium, though, and we want to impose ourselves, be courageous and go out there to play our game.

Two tactically good teams are facing each other and we both share a similar philosophy, based on possession. Both sides know what is at stake and that a good foundation can be laid tomorrow, but I expect it to be an even game, hopefully with a few highlights for the fans.

I expect the atmosphere to be excellent, like it has always been here. “Enough has been said about the change in coach and the focus should be on the game, out of respect for the players. For Basel, the important thing is this game, not how I am or how Thorsten Fink is getting on in Hamburg.”

Satturday, Swiss Cup: FC Schötz 1-5 FC Basel 1893 (Koch 84; Andrist 8 57, Huggel 34, Zoua 79, A Frei 89)
Colomba; T Xhaka, Ajeti, Kováč, Park; Andrist (A Frei 80), Huggel (G Xhaka 67), Cabral, F Frei (Schürpf 71); Chipperfield, Zoua

• Basel are now nine unbeaten after knocking their third division hosts out in the last 32. Alexander Frei has nine goals in six games, including three penalties.

Team news
Marco Streller was rested on Saturday after complaining of muscular injury. Valentin Stocker (knee ligaments), Gilles Yapi (knee ligaments) and Kay Voser (ankle) are sidelined but Genséric Kusunga back back in training after a knee injury.

Benfica
Coach Jorge Jesus

I know Basel very well. They are a team with plenty of international players, not just Swiss but other nationalities, too. They have lots of quality in attack with [Alexander and Fabian] Frei. “Basel showed in England [against Manchester United] what kind of quality they have in their squad and that draw was no accident. They showed what they are capable of and we know exactly what we are up against.”

The only headache I have regards my tactical selection, but we have lots of different options in different positions and there is a good battle for places, which ensures that all of the players have to give their best. Although Thorsten Fink is no longer there, the way he played will be ingrained in them and they will probably play the same way.

Weekend result
Saturday, Portuguese Cup: Portimonense SC 0-2 SL Benfica (Bruno César 59, Rodrigo 72)
Eduardo; Miguel Vítor, Luisão, Garay, Capdevila; Matić, David Simão (Witsel 56), Bruno César, Nolito; Rodrigo (Rodrigo Mora 78), Nélson Oliveira (Saviola 46)

• Also in cup action, Benfica are now in the fourth round after an away win against second division opposition. Eduardo, Nélson Oliveira and David Simão made debuts in a much-changed side and Rodrigo opened his Benfica account as they moved to 14 unbeaten this season.

Team news
Javi García has missed the last two games with a calf injury, while Enzo Peréz remains out with a knee problem.

Manchester City FC and Villarreal CF go into Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League Group A game without a win between them but Roberto Mancini is backing his side, on one point, to get off the mark against visitors with two defeats to their name. Villarreal coach Juan Carlos Garrido warns that the Liga side are not to be taken lightly despite a disappointing start to the campaign.

Manchester City
Manager Roberto Mancini

I think we still need to learn, but [the 2-0 defeat against FC Bayern München] was only our second game in the Champions League so that’s normal. “All we need is a victory. Tomorrow will be hard, but if we beat Villarreal everything can change”. Against Bayern in Munich you know you could well lose as they’re a very strong team. They played better than us and deserved to win the game.

First of all we need to get three points tomorrow. Villarreal are a good team, they’ve have played in the Champions League many times in the last ten years and they play good football. It doesn’t matter how well we play, we just need to win. After this game, if we win, then we’ll be back in with a chance of winning the group, depending on what happens between Bayern and Napoli of course.

Weekend result
Saturday: Manchester City 4-1 Aston Villa FC (Balotelli 28, Johnson 47, Kompany 52, Milner 71; Warnock 65)
Hart; Richards (K Touré 66), Lescott, Kompany, Clichy; De Jong, Barry, Milner, Johnson (Hargreaves 77), Y Touré (Silva 65); Balotelli

• City’s ninth successive home league win took them two points clear of Manchester United FC at the summit. They have equalled Arsenal FC’s Premier League record of 27 goals in the first eight games.

Team news
Mario Balotelli serves the last match of a three-game suspension. Sergio Agüero sat out Saturday’s match with a groin problem.

Villarreal
Coach Juan Carlos Garrido

“Nobody gives us a chance, but we want to show what we can do and that Villarreal really do have top players”. We’re not in the best situation but we’re all good professionals; we all enjoy our job, we’re confident in the work we’re doing and we’ll all relish coming to a place like this and playing against the kind of players City have.

We need to show bravery, guts and the players need to want the ball all the time against every team. Of course that’s harder against a great side like City but we’ve got to take the initiative, show our class, play our football, try and control the game, hold on to the ball and demonstrate our best qualities.

Weekend result
Saturday: Getafe CF 0-0 Villarreal
López; Zapata, Gonzalo, Marchena, Catalá; Valero, Senna (Wakaso 46), De Guzmán (Joselu 87), Bruno, Cani (Hernán Pérez 80); Rossi

• Villarreal, who ended last season with two draws and two defeats, have won just two of their last 15 fixtures in all competitions. Garrido’s side have failed to triumph in six away games this term, losing four.

Team news
Mateo Musacchio missed the trip to Getafe with a left thigh strain while Nilmar is still out after surgery on a right-knee cyst. Marco Ruben is nursing a broken toe and Garrido confirmed that Ángel López, Javier Camuñas and Marcos Senna were also unavailable.
