It is impossible to escape the shadow of history when it comes to FC Barcelona, Manchester United FC and Wembley, but Sir Alex Ferguson would have it no other way as he plots a fourth European title for his newly crowned English champions on Saturday night.

The Scot has already rewritten the record books with his achievements at Old Trafford, who have just overtaken Liverpool FC with a 19th domestic title, but he is not a man to forget when things go wrong either. As he reminded the assembled press at Wembley on Friday, he tends to make amends for past setbacks – such as the 4-0 loss at FC Barcelona in 1994 which set United on a learning curve concluding with their 1999 UEFA Champions League final triumph against FC Bayern München back at the Camp Nou – and he is confident this United team will avoid a repeat of their disappointment against the Azulgrana two years ago in Rome.

Recalling that 2-0 final defeat, Sir Alex said: “We were disappointed we lost the game but it isn’t a matter of revenge it is about our own personal pride. We are very focused this time and our preparation has been better. I think we maybe made one or two mistakes last time but not this time.”

Ferguson found various reasons for confidence, citing Wayne Rooney’s “progress as a player in Europe” since 2009, the experience of his rock-solid central defensive pairing of Nemanja Vidić and Rio Ferdinand, and the “sharpness” that Antonio Valencia has brought since returning from injury. He also contemplated the potential impact of Javier Hernández, likely to start in United’s attack: “He has got the temperament, the speed, the movement: all the things necessary.”

For United this is a third final in four years while Barcelona are seeking a third UEFA Champions League success in six seasons – and, like United, a fourth European Champion Clubs’ Cup at the place where they won their first. These two famous teams are enjoying golden eras in Europe and Sir Alex believes the stage is set for a classic.

“The success both teams have had in the last decade has been enormous,” he said. “”It could be the best final of the decade – the attraction of two great teams with a great history is obvious, it is an appealing final” in terms of what could happen. There could be a lot of goals, a lot of excitement and there will be a lot of good football I’m sure. It is set up, the platform is there and let’s hope it turns out that way.”

His counterpart, Josep Guardiola, was equally hopeful. “When you play in the final and both teams want to win and both teams want to play, and both respect the ball and want to attack, for the rest of the world I imagine it will be a good final.”

The Barcelona coach – whom Sir Alex once considered signing before he left Camp Nou for Italy – believes his team will have to play better at Wembley than they did in Rome to overcome the English champions. “”We have to do some things differently compared to 2009 in terms of intensity at different stages of the match”,” he said, perhaps mindful of the opening ten minutes in 2009 when United enjoyed an early ascendancy before Samuel Eto’o's goal.

Guardiola is expected to welcome back captain Carles Puyol for the first time since the semi-final second leg against Real Madrid CF; he could feature at left-back with Javier Mascherano alongside Gerard Piqué in central defence, although Éric Abidal is also available. “They are both ready physically and mentally. I am delighted they are both back, we had one knee injury [Puyol], we had a liver tumour [Abidal] so to have them back would be a symbol of our desire to be champions again.”

For many observers all that stands between all-conquering FC Porto and UEFA Europa League glory is a matter of hours but their former striker, Domingos Paciência, has other ideas as he aims to leave SC Braga on a high.

“I’m proud to have led Braga, after 90 years of existence, to this,” said the 42-year-old, who has announced that Wednesday’s game will be his last at the club. “It’s a dream to get to Dublin but I don’t want to wake up yet. I want to go on dreaming for one more day. When I wake up I want to be holding the trophy.”

It is an image few could have imagined going into this campaign. Braga’s collection of major trophies consists of a lone 1966 Portuguese Cup and before this season they had never advanced beyond the last 16 in European competition. Yet a combination of hunger, dogged resistance and drive has brought them to the cusp of continental glory. Such is their focus, Paciência did not even notice the trophy sitting next to him on Tuesday.

“I’m focused on that cup,” he said after locating it. “I want to see my players lift it. I haven’t been sleeping well, thinking about all the possibilities. Destiny has its irony – that’s why we’re facing Porto – but while they are favourites, in 1987 when I was part of the Porto team everyone thought Bayern München would win. We came through.”

A Braga triumph would constitute an even greater shock. Porto have been in majestic form in what is still André Villas-Boas’s first full season as a coach, finishing their Liga campaign unbeaten after a 2-0 win at CS Marítimo on Saturday. They won both games with Braga to move to 92 victories in 131 meetings with their northern Portugal rivals; the Arsenalistas have mustered 17 in reply.

Yet Paciência’s men are underestimated at your peril. Their victims this season include six sides with European titles, Liverpool FC and SL Benfica chief among them – why not a seventh? Villas-Boas is certainly taking nothing for granted, pointing out that while he will reluctantly accept the favourites’ tag being attached to his team, “Braga have beaten every favourite they’ve faced so far.

“We’ve been targeting this since [beating KRC Genk in] the play-offs nine months ago,” the 33-year-old added, shorn of Cristian Rodríguez with a hamstring problem. “It’s an obligation for a side like us to win everything we can and we made our commitment early this season. We just need to focus on playing our own game – it has got us this far.”

So either Porto will be crowned UEFA Europa League winners or Braga will take their place among European footballing royalty. Whatever happens, while the Republic of Ireland’s first UEFA club competition final has been somewhat overshadowed by the arrival of Britain’s Queen, her majesty may have to share the limelight for a few hours on Wednesday.

Juan Carlos Garrido will make one last throw of the dice as Villarreal CF look to overturn a 5-1 first-leg defeat at FC Porto to reach the UEFA Europa League final.

The Spanish side came completely unstuck at the Estádio do Dragão last week despite leading 1-0 at the break, but − having won all seven of their European home games this season – will look to become only the fourth team to recover from a four-goal deficit in a UEFA club competition second leg.

“We will play our most attacking football,” promised Garrido. “We are in the semi-final of a major competition. It is a very important game and we are looking to overturn that result to reach the final. “We are the ones who can turn the tie around, and getting to the final is everyone’s dream”.”

Defender José Catalá is suspended, while the Yellow Submarine will also be without Gonzalo (calf), Angel López (torn knee ligament) and Javier Oliva (wrist), although midfielder Marcos Senna is back after recovering from a hamstring injury. Carlos Marchena will feature having served a one-match ban in Sunday’s 2-1 Liga defeat of Getafe CF.

“I believe in my team and everyone has enough motivation to achieve our goal,” said Garrido. “We have beaten some very good teams in this competition, and football rewards winners. You have to exude confidence and demand the best. My players have put in a lot effort over the season, and the next step is to reach this final.”

Mindful perhaps that Villarreal have twice scored five goals at home in Europe this term – most recently beating FC Twente 5-1 in the last eight − Porto coach André Villas-Boas has recalled goalkeeper Helton, Cristian Săpunaru and João Moutinho after they were rested for the Portuguese champions’ 4-0 win against Vitória FC at the weekend.

The Dragons have more of a penchant for scoring five goals, though, having done so in their last three matches in this competition. With that in mind, and despite their sizeable lead, Villas-Boas has no intention of ordering his team to curtail their natural instincts.

“We will play our style of football and our philosophy: 4-3-3 with an attacking outlook, as we have been doing all season,” he said. “Nothing is impossible and anything can happen in football but I have full confidence in my team.”

Porto, adds Villas-Boas, will be ready for whatever Villarreal throw at them. “We are physically and mentally prepared for any situation in the game, as shown by our experience against big teams in big stadiums. I hope that if victory is achieved it becomes a victory for the whole country, and pride for all the players who form this team.”

Domingos Paciência calls it the biggest match in SC Braga’s history and it is a measure of the northern Portuguese side’s development that the coach will only be satisfied if they win it.

Never mind that Thursday’s UEFA Europa League semi-final second leg against SL Benfica marks their 18th game in European football this campaign – a club record – or that they are competing as an equal with traditional heavyweights Benfica and FC Porto to make it a first-ever all-Portuguese UEFA final. Now is the time for the Guerreiros do Minho (Minho warriors) to be winners. “We cannot be happy until we are winning things,” Paciência said. “”We have shown great heart to get this far, but we believe we can reach the final”.”

The 42-year-old, who in his debut season last term guided Braga to their highest Liga placing of second, also had no hesitation in labelling Benfica’s visit as the most important date in the Arsenalista timeline. The difference from last week’s 2-1 opening-leg loss in Lisbon will be the absence of first-night nerves and the presence of a home crowd that has helped Paciência’s team to six victories and a draw in eight 2010/11 European home matches.

Hence the trainer’s confidence: “There will be no stress and we won’t make the same mistakes. It will be a completely different dynamic from a league game and the first-leg result gives us real hope in front of our fans.”

The former FC Porto and Portugal forward has no worries about the suspension of defensive midfielder Vandinho – Leandro Salino deputised well at Liverpool FC in March – or the threat of a final ban hanging over Custódio, Miguel Garcia and Alberto Rodríguez. Getting to Dublin, at this unprecedented moment for Braga, is all that matters.

“This will be a very intense match and we are ready,” he continued. “I am very proud of this squad. We have a brilliant dressing room, great professionals who have been through a lot together, and for a team outside Portugal’s big three [Benfica, Porto and Sporting Clube de Portugal] it is great to be in this position.”

Braga’s sole trophy, the 1966 Taça de Portugal, weighs little against the achievements of two-time European champions Benfica. However, the gap in playing quality is not so huge according to Eagles coach Jorge Jesus. He reckons “playing in Braga is as difficult as playing at Porto or Sporting” and makes the hosts – Benfica’s main title rivals last year – part of a new four-team cartel at the Liga summit. His job of fending them off on Thursday is complicated by the ban served by Pablo Aimar, although one man confirmed to play is under-pressure goalkeeper Roberto.

Whatever the personnel, Jesus expects a similar contest to last Thursday, when Benfica took the offensive initiative whereas Braga defended and counterattacked with equal assurance. “We could not be more motivated,” added a manager whose players will not sit on their slender advantage as they chase a first European honour in 49 years. “”Our best qualities are in attack so we will go for goal”. I think Braga will be very well-organised at the back and will try to hit us on the break.”

Ralf Rangnick is asking his FC Schalke 04 players to show they have learned the lessons from a one-sided first-leg defeat when they visit Manchester United FC for the conclusion of their UEFA Champions League semi-final. United counterpart, Sir Alex Ferguson, meanwhile, has a selection quandary.

Sir Alex Ferguson, United manager
“I hope Manchester United don’t regard it as a formality, I certainly won’t. The work ethic will be very high tomorrow “in order for us to qualify.

If you look at the experience of last year where we lost the league [with a vital home defeat by Chelsea] it was after a Wednesday game against Bayern [a 2-1 quarter-final first-leg defeat in Munich]. The team was very tired against Chelsea in the next game so that has to have a bearing on my team selection – [they are] two massive games but each as important as the other. There will be some changes; hopefully I will have a nucleus of a team that is good enough to still win.

There seem to be better concentration levels in European games. It is not the regular football – the Premier League is incessant, tribalism almost. You are playing a London team, a Yorkshire team, Liverpool teams and it creates that incredible competitive edge. You go to Europe and there are different ways of playing, different tactics so it possibly brings different concentration from us.

Ralf Rangnick, Schalke coach
“We want to show we can play better, that we learned our lesson from last week and then we’ll see what happens”. If Sir Alex Ferguson does spare players it shows he has belief in his squad. And If we have a chance it is up to us to perform in contrast to the first leg. We need to take a different approach, learn from that and apply the lessons tomorrow.

The first ten to 15 minutes, Manchester United will try to score. I think we have to be well organised during this period and then we have to take our chances when we get them, even if there are just two minutes left. You only have to think of Man United in the Champions League final [against Bayern] when they came back to win 2-1.

The first leg we competed for the first 15 minutes then we gave away too many clear chances. We are looking to change that. When we played in Milan against Inter they didn’t give us much hope either. Part of the hope comes from the development the team has shown over recent weeks – I hope they can show what they can do tomorrow.

Ideally we’re looking at playing [Sergio Escudero] at left-back, he does have strong attacking qualities and is a possibility for tomorrow but we will have to see what happens in training.

Team news
• United
Wayne Rooney missed training on Tuesday along with Fabio; the England forward has a tight hamstring and will be assessed on Wednesday. Ryan Giggs missed Sunday’s Arsenal FC loss with “a bit of flu” but should be fit, while Dimitar Berbatov and Anders Lindegaard are back in the squad after lay-offs. Darren Fletcher is available after a virus and will be involved, according to Sir Alex.

• Schalke
Benedikt Höwedes has missed Schalke’s last three games with a stomach strain and is due to have a late fitness test along with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (knee). “We will not take unnecessary risks,” said Rangnick. “He has to be 100% fit.” Mario Gavranović (ankle), Christoph Moritz (knee) and Christian Pander (toe, cold) are all out.

Weekend results
Sunday: Arsenal FC 1-0 Manchester United
(Ramsey 56)
United suffered a defeat which means they will drop to second if they lose at home to Chelsea next Sunday – they started March 15 points ahead of the Blues. Sir Alex made two changes to the side that won at Schalke, Antonio Valencia and Giggs making way for Nani and Anderson.

Saturday: FC Bayern München 4-1 Schalke
(Robben 6, Müller 13 84, Gomez 19; Badstuber og 7)
Rangnick made two changes to the side beaten by United, Edu and Alexander Baumjohann making way for Peer Kluge and Anthony Annan, but could not avoid a third successive defeat. Schalke have won only three of their last ten away matches.

FC Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola is expecting an anxious evening at the Camp Nou despite his side’s 2-0 first-leg advantage over Real Madrid CF. While Guardiola also broke the good news of Éric Abidal’s recovery from liver surgery, Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka played down criticism of his side’s approach in the first match as he said José Mourinho’s touchline ban would not be a problem for the Merengues.

Josep Guardiola, Barcelona coach
I don’t know what Madrid to expect. They have such a strong team and so many players that they can play in several ways. This is a very tough semi-final tie. We shall see how strong mentally we are tomorrow. I know the fans will help us especially if things get tough.

I imagine that we have to be very focused because it’ll be tough, mentally speaking. We will have to move the ball fast and I am sure there will be a lot of anxiety but the fans will be there to help us. I want to thank them for this in advance and I want to thank the players for letting me experience this match. We want to try to reach the final again this season and I am very eager for the match to start, for the world to see it and to reach the final.

Tomorrow we will try to play the best football possible and what happened is in the past. I hope those things we saw last week don’t happen again. I haven’t thought about who I will field tomorrow. [Seydou] Keita last week was fundamental and made the team very solid, he’s essential for us in this type of match.

We have to be prepared for anything tomorrow: they can attack or defend, but we have to be ready for anything. Tomorrow Madrid will play the match of a lifetime to try to get to the final. They have a good enough squad to make life tricky for us.

Abidal has recovered and it’s great news. Milito is injured and we spoke to the doctors to see if Abidal could help. They told us he was perfect physically but that he has lost a lot of weight. The team is really happy to have him back. We’re in the semi-final which is great news, and then Abidal is back and that’s great.

Aitor Karanka, Madrid assistant coach
We have to respect people saying that we’re defensive. Cristiano [Ronaldo] said that and if he has to be in the starting XI then he will be. Tomorrow we will see if we play defensively or not. It depends if there are 11 players on the pitch. They’re just ways of playing football and the important thing is to be in the final.

The coach won’t be on the bench or in the dressing room area. We had that situation against Auxerre [and won 4-0] so it isn’t a problem. I think if there’s someone who feels bad now it is the coach for not being able to be on the bench tomorrow. So if we can win, we can dedicate it to him for being in the final – that would be important.

In football we’re all professional and we’re grown up enough. The Real Madrid coach said it was his fault that we lost the match last week so we are able to be self-critical.

Team news
• Barcelona
Guardiola had good news with the return of Abidal (liver tumour) and Andrés Iniesta (right calf) to his squad on the eve of the game. However, Martín Montoya’s first start for the club on Saturday lasted 14 minutes before he was taken off with a broken collarbone and dislocated shoulder. Gabriel Milito tore a thigh muscle scoring a disallowed goal late on and joins Maxwell (groin) and Adriano (right thigh) on the sidelines. Bojan Krkić (knee ligament) is a long-term absentee.

• Madrid
Sami Khedira has not played since tearing his right adductor muscle in the Copa del Rey final. Fernando Gago remains absent with a torn adductor.

Weekend results
Saturday: Real Sociedad de Fútbol 2-1 Barcelona
(Ifrán 71, Prieto 82pen; Thiago 29)
The Catalan giants’ 31-game unbeaten run in the Liga, one shy of Real Sociedad’s 31-year-old Spanish top-flight record, ended as Guardiola made seven changes to the side that defeated Real Madrid last Wednesday. Only Lionel Messi, Xavi, Gerard Piqué and Keita retained their places.

Saturday: Real Madrid 2-3 Real Zaragoza
(Ramos 62, Benzema 84; Lafita 41 77, Gabi 54pen)
Ricardo Carvalho was sent off six minutes from time as Madrid, who paraded the Copa del Rey before kick-off, slipped to their first back-to-back defeats of the season. The Merengues have conceded eight goals in their last three games; as many as they shipped in 22 previous outings.
